I will give the man (or more likely his aides) credit for at least responding... They sent a very concise and to the point email response to me.

Dear Mr. Smiley,

Thank you for contacting my office regarding same-sex marriage. My position is that marriage should remain a sacred union between a man and a woman. In other words, I am in favor of traditional marriage.

Thank you once again for your concern and for sharing your views regarding this issue. I appreciate you taking the time to write me. Feel free to follow my positions on issues on my website: http://www.chaffetz.house.gov.

Sincerely,

Jason Chaffetz
Member of Congress

While I obviously disagree with his position, I have to respect him taking the time to respond... only problem being that I have never written to Representative Chaffetz about gay marriage.
I did however write him about the importance of ENDA and that no person, regardless of orientation, should fear discrimination in the workplace. So thanks for proving that you don't actually even bother to pretend to read the correspondence before sending out a premade form letter... apparently you get as far as GLBT and send out the gay marriage letter.

On an unrelated note, I'm still waiting for Obama's office to send a reply to my email asking how they reconciled his campaign promise to end DADT with him ordering the DOJ to defend the law... I kind of doubt I'll get a response to that.

Betcha if you said you were gay you'd be in jail right now.

From all accounts the Obama administration is still moving forward to ending DADT...

And they haven't responded to my year-old gun control email either (suggesting a different form targeted more towards criminals and not law abiding citizens). I'm willing to give 'em a break seeing as they probably get millions weekly if not daily.

Also, I got ten bucks on the odds that it was an aide who read your email and sent the pre-made letter without anyone remotely important ever knowing about it :D

Oh I got a reply from Matheson as well, I wrote him saying now that healthcare was voted on it was a good time to move onto anti-discrimination laws. He replied with a long drawn out speech about healthcare.
