View Full Version : Holiday= I can text you at midnight!

Before anyone starts telling me "Why don't you keep your phone oooofffff?", I need to say this: I have my phone left on because I have a great uncle who is dying of cancer. He could die any day now. I also can't stand having an alarm clock because the glowing numbers keep me awake. Cellphones stop glowing after a while. Plus, I would expect my friends to have the courtesy not to text or call me unless it is an emergency.
So at midnight, I got a text saying "Happy Easter!"
Why is it that every holiday, the rules of sleeping courtesy suddenly don't exist? I am okay with midnight texts on New Year's. However, I don't like texts at midnight on Christmas,Easter,Thanksgiving,St Patrick's Day, Valentine's Day,Halloween, or even my own birthday.
If you are one of these people who do this, that's fine if you do, but I hate it being done to me and I won't do it to anyone else.
Does this bother anyone else, or is it just me being a cranky bitch?

maybe 20% cranky bitch. I dunno 'bout you, but I'm usually still up during holidays, and so are most of my friends.

I'm a residental night owl. I'm usually up well past midnight. In off beat chance I am asleep, I put my TEXT on silence, and my phone on. That way texts don't wake me, but if someone calls I can answer it in case of emergency.

I'm not up very late usually. I'm trying to re-train my body to go to sleep at a good time and stay asleep throughout the night, so when I return to work for the summer, it won't be as hard. School has been really hard on my sleeping schedule.
I, too, am a night owl. And that would still piss me off. Why? Because after about nine o'clock or so, I like to not have to worry about the outside world trying to bug me, and I can just relax and be me.

Turn off phone :cool::p.
Meh. I don't have to worry. I rarely get calls that late.

I got all those texts today between noon and 5 pm. Of course I was infuriated, I was trying to sleep because I go back to work tonight.
I have a problem with anyone who thinks nothing of texting me any old time of day, having no regard for the shift that I work.
I don't want an alarm clock, either. I shouldn't have to get one just because people are rude and inconsiderate. And why ditch the phone just in case there were a real emergency?

Thus is why I keep a record of when I can and cannot text/call of my friends. So that I don't annoy them. Put the foot down on them, and kick their ass if they do :D

Exactly. I'm a nightowl too, but I know not everyone is. And while I turn my phone off when I go to bed, I know more and more people are ditching their landlines and can't just turn their cell phone off.

I am able to put texts on vibrate or silence, but if I turn the ringer off, then my alarm doesn't work. Hence why people kept patronizing me to get an alarm clock, and I really don't have a good excuse not to, but at the same time, as I said before, why do it just because some people are rude and inconsiderate? Why put the entire phone on silent, what if my dad had a heart attack or my mom got into a car accident?

Thus the asskicking. Your a tough cookie Blas. They'll back off if you give them your death glare, followed by "Do. Not. Call. Me. Between. Noon. And. Five"
Unless of course its a real emergency.

And of course everybody knows when you work a weird shift and are asleep during the day. Its not like they have their own lives to live and don't spend all their time keeping track of you.

I've called/texted people at bad times *by mistake* occasionally, but to deliberately set off someone's phone late at night on a holiday that does not, traditionally, involve staying up? Very rude.
On a side note (and only because some people are talking of alarm clocks, not because I think you should have to get one) I got a software alarm clock recently. It goes off by waking my computer, setting the volume to 100%, and playing, for now at least, player piano music at me. (not an objectionable sound, but also not one I could sleep through or listen to indefinitely while forgetting that I'm supposed to be getting up.)

I don't mind the midnight ones. I'm usually awake until at least 2am every day anyway (except during the past previous couple summers as I had work at 7:30am Mon-Fri). It's the 8am wake up texts on holidays that I have off that piss me off. First off, why the hell are you awake at 8am on a Friday when you are 20+ years old and the youngest member of your family? And even then, when is it EVER acceptable to text me at 8am, any day of the year, when it's not an emergency. If it's a day off, someone better be dying for me to be woken up by that non-sense at 8am. My aunt and my dad are big ones on this. "I thought you'd be awake!" Um, why?

Sweet! Cans I be a text buddy? puhleeeeeeeeeeeease? I won't do it that early. (assuming you tell me what time zone you are).
But side note, I'm youngest in my family. I'm usually awake that early, cause well, just getting off work myself.
When I was working anway.

I just hate mass-texts on principle. Text me if you actually have something to say. If whatever you have to say is of any importance, call. Anything less than that can be handled in a Facebook message.

Yeah...no. I don't pay for my phone; I'm on my parents' plan. (It's part of our arrangement. They want me to always have a way to call home, and will provide it to me. If I'll call every day. :P) So, I try to be respectful of that expense. I do have texting, but it's not unlimited. I really only use my phone to call home and to talk to boyfriend - 9 times out of 10, the rest of the time I just send FB messages.

Ahh. See, sister pays for me and mom. Seeing as she makes... alot and alot of money.
But she has a masters. Getting her PhD now. My mom is a total smartass. Sister got the Smarts. I'm the Ass.
Do I have you on my facebook? I think I do. I'm pretty sure...

Is the sarcasm really necessary?
Blas has been working the night shift for a long time now. I've never met her in person, and even I know it. Anyone to whom she's close enough to give her cell number would know it too.

Even I know that she works grave. She's only posted it about a million times. And it's not like we're super close.

I don't mean to steal the OP's thread or make it all about "Blas the vampire worker", but yes, it's something I do make a big deal about anytime I make an appointment or meet someone new, etc etc.
While I have never and will never expect the rest of the world to conform to my sleep schedule, respect goes both ways. People kick and scream about phone calls from friends (albeit usually drunk, though) at 3 am, well, my coworkers and I kick and scream about phone calls at 3 pm.
I apologize if I have stolen the thunder or made anything about myself here, I just felt the need to jump in and vent. I brought this topic to work with me last night and a bunch of my coworkers had this happen to them as well yesterday. One lady said "My god, some people....it could be freaking Arbor Day and I get 10 texts about it, my phone tweet tweets over and over and I seriously want to just text them back something equally stupid when they are asleep at 3 am."
This topic in particular, I think, is a peeve to a lot of people, even regardless of the time factor. In general, I think it's stupid to mass text people "Happy Easter!" "Happy Turkey Day!" no matter what time it is, but that's just me. They are along the same annoyance lines of texts that say "Sup?" or those annoying chain "Send this to 10 people or a clown will kill your mother in her sleep" and chain sex jokes.

Don't worry big sis. You aren't stealing from me.
As for texting at night, if it is an emergency, I prefer a call. Not a text. I have told my friends not to text or call me after ten pm unless it is an emergency or if I get a hold of them first.
My rule on holiday texting is this: if the person texts me first about the holiday, I will text them back. I tend to call or leave something on my facebook. The only exception to this rule is my dad because he is usually working and he lives in FL, so calling wouldn't be much of an option. On people's birthdays, I will leave a text, but not until noon. I don't call or text people until noon, unless I know for sure that they are up.

I think it's kinda cool when people text me on my birthday *coughAPRIL26*cough*cough* at midnight, but for Easter? Get a life. I don't remember staying up all night waiting for Easter or Valentine's or St. Paddy's or whatever day to happen at 12am. Even when I was little and wanted to wait for Santa. lol.
Last night's phone call from my brother telling me that there was a 7.2 quake in California where my dad and Nana live? Reasons like that are why I have a phone on 24/7.

First off, why the hell are you awake at 8am on a Friday when you are 20+ years old and the youngest member of your family?Well, just as New Year's is celebrated by staying up late, Easter is often celebrated by getting up early. Sunrise service was at 7:00, over by 7:30 and immediately followed by breakfast at the church; had I been the sort to send "Happy Easter" text messages to everybody I know in the first place, 8:00 would have been right about the time. But I prefer email for that sort of thing, and then people will get the message whenever they feel like it.

I don;t mind texts I can usually sleep through them no problem... I hate POINTLESS PHONE CALLS. i had a former co-worker call me at 3AM because she was on facebook and noticed a mutal friend and wondered how i knew her. WTF!!!
I agree the happy holiday texts in general can be annoying, especially when people get pissed that you don't respond to a mass mailed message that had no direct reason for me to respond.
