This article (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/7577659.stm) states that as of the end of 2008 every person in the UK will be able to see crime maps for their local area.

How does this work for crimes that allow for anonymity such as rape, and to what detail will the go down to, if it identifies the house where a burglary took place there could be issues with Data Protection however if it's not detailed enough the map is useless.

In the US, at least, colleges are required to follow Jeanne Clery's law. Clery was raped and murdered in her dorm room. Afterwards, her parents learned that she was just one of many victims at the university, nearly forty in three years. The Jeanne Clery Act (http://www.securityoncampus.org/schools/cleryact/cleryact.html) requires each college to publish an annual "Clery Report" listing specific crimes.

It's an excellent tool for prospective students and their parents concerned about safety. I would assume a crime map of a neighborhood to work in a similiar way. The report could be made anonymous enough to protect the victims while at the same time allowing the public to have more access to public information.
