  • BC Adjusts Smoking Law For E-cigs

September 1st, 2016, new laws came into effect in BC limiting the use of e-cigs/vape pens.
While I do think a couple of the provisions are more stringent than they should be, I have absolutely no sympathy for the e-cig users who are crying foul and that the changes are unfair over this.

    In particular, the provisions that have garnered the loudest protests;
How dare the government tell e-cig users where they can and cannot use them (Banned in workplaces, parks, and beaches, can't be within six meters of doorways)

The biggest reason that I have no sympathy for the e-cig users complaining about this is I have asthma, can be pretty bad some days. Unfortunately, the perfumed/scented vape triggers an asthma attack. The local vape users usual reaction to a request of not to blow the vape in my face, or my moving away a bit so the perfume doesn't bother me as much so I can breath easier, is to get in my face, belligerent, rude, condescending, and how dare I infringe on their rights.

Since e-cigs became a thing locally, I have had ONE vape user respond with 'Oh, sorry man' when I explain the reason why I am moving to the side or asking for it not to be blown in my face.

*nods* My thing is I had friends that were all pissy when they couldn't smoke in bars and they like comedians were all "You're drinking how much do you really care"

Answer a lot. See I control how much i drink thus controlling the damage to my liver.

Smoking I couldn't control how much others smoked thus having 0 control over my exposure to said smoke. Vaping was not introduced as some "healthy alternative to second hand smoke" It was introduced as "Hey this is brand new so they haven't regulated it yet so fuck your friends"

But advertised it as the former. I had to explain to my friends "You don't know what the fuck it can do"

So yeah now it should automatically fall under the same laws that govern smoking until such time as they have proven it's safe.

The scent-perfume thing I can understand, but studies have shown that the damage to lungs from the vapor of a e-cig or vaporizer is the same as breathing oxygen. The "damage" was the same between the control group of lung tissue and the lung tissue exposed to the vapor from one of those devices.

Smoking real cigs though... yeah we know the damage that causes.

My only issue with e-cigs is those people who claim that what they're exhaling is ABSOLUTELY nothing but water vapor. I love to see them clam up when I point out that water vapor doesn't usually smell like hot cinnamon and burn my nose. There's also the whole issue with the liquids not being sold in childproof bottles but that's an entirely different rant.

Whose research? What organization? Who are their backers?

          http://www.bu.edu/research/articles/behind-the-vapor/

According to this article E-Cigs are unregulated and no one knows what's really in them they are still trying to figure out. The article includes opposing viewpoints in regards to E-Cigs. The article is from the Boston University of Medicine.

Preliminary tests show possible cancer links but the scientist doing those studies states it's too early and ireesponsible to declare one way or the other.

The problem I have is that the only people that have "assured" me that E-Cigs are totally fine and won't cause me any second party harm are the companies that profit from their sale. If they are healthy that's fine but even when vaping while I am at his house my best friend still goes outside because he doesn't know the effect vaping could have on his kids.

I think anytime a person wants to do a thing that could potentially affect my health negatively that I have every right to know that for a fact it won't before they blow smoke sorry "vapor" in my face.

            Good(tm).

The vaping was only starting up when I moved out of Van so I never had to strangle anyone on the Skytrain. Be a shame if I had too when I was back in town for something~

Some ass was doing it at bowling last week. Every time he'd walk past my table, he'd blow a huge cloud of vape. The smell was annoying as hell.

Pretty much the only reason that e-cigs have gained as much market share as they have is that they came into existence before laws governing them could be drawn up (including laws dictating how much they should be taxed). Looks like B.C. law is catching up to them. One thing I'd like to see is governments taking the e-cig companies at their word on equivalence. E-cig claims that one cartridge is equivalent to 2 packs of cigarettes? Fine - that means each cartridge should be assessed the same excise taxes as 2 packs of cigarettes. Hey, what are you (manufacturers) complaining about? You said that each cartridge was equivalent to 2 packs of cigarettes, so we're treating it as if it is.
