  • My Flash Learning VS. Harry Potter Misseducation

1990 I watched the original Flash show and went "zomg awesome" and fell in love. A year later I started collecting DC comics and became a Wally West disciple. Learned all about the philosopher's stone. In 2000 handed a movie called "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" immediately confused especially when movie describes stone and I go "but that's a philosopher's stone"

Years later fans of Tom Felton follow him to The Flash will they get confused and angry when Dr. Alchemy's weapon is called the Philosopher's Stone instead of the Sorcerer's Stone?

Psst, it was only called the Sorcerer's Stone in the US.

In the rest of the world it's Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.

And that's because the publishers thought that people would mistake it for a book about philosophy.

Which is stupid because we're not that dumb over here.

I know but I am sitting in the US. Talking about fans in the US of a show most popular in the US. I am aware it's not going to be an issue anywhere else. There have been fans though that didn't know it was called Philosopher's stone across the pond.

No Khel we are not as evidenced by the fact we didn't collectively go "Sorcerer's Stone? But they're Wizards"

In fact most kids you tell them the name of a thing is the name of a thing they don't spend a whole lot of time why. Those that do get to expand their horizons when they research Philosopher's Stone in the UK in the US they get to go "Oh it's not based on anything because no book anywhere talks about a Sorcerer's stone must be a Rowling invention.

Flash wasn't the only US Property to call it Philosopher's stone either the stone is mentioned in Hudson Hawk too. In fact every time lead to gold is brought up in the US in a story it brings up the philosopher's stone.

To go back to your original question then:

I think if there are any Tom Felton fans they will be confused regardless seeing as he's basically done nothing but dramas and period pieces since Harry Potter. -.-

Hudson Hawk was awful. But that aside aren't you kind of arguing against your own argument now? You're down to Tom Felton fans who have followed him for years through his "serious actor" phase that have landed on The Flash but managed to avoid all other references or connections to the philosopher's stone in other media.

So I guess the answer to your question is maybe? But the subject of your question seems like rather small group.

The original question is more "ha ha that could be funny" and less "oh my god serious problem guys"

The other was more a rant at the "seriously we have the same cultural heritage as you UK most of us came from you or near you"

Honestly I more picture it being the Lord of the Rings problem.

In my childhood I read a lot of books. A lot. My brother read 3. Only 3. They are 3 I never read until adulthood.

They are Tolkien's Lord of the rings. For all of the "it got kids reading" I am sure that like my brother who hated reading loved LOTR that there are going to be people whose only pleasure reading was Harry Potter.

Ah, okay. Sorry, my forum sensors are a bit busted thanks to the unrelenting death march of this election cycle. >.>

Don't worry: a month from now, they'll start a whole new election cycle. Perhaps even find a way to make it worse than this one.
