      Shortest version:

Trump's FCC chair is an industry shill who tries to frame the older, low-regulation approach to connectivity as "the free and open internet" and basically wants to do away with those pesky regulations in favor of gentlemen's agreements to not abuse power by doing things like stifling competition. He also pretends that fears of these abuses are absurd and lacking any precedent.

I don't know what the answer is, but I do know that it's ridiculous sometimes what we pay for internet access & speed here in the U.S. My understanding is that there are other countries who actually have better (i.e. faster) Internet than we do here in the U.S.

I get capitalism and all that, but you'd think that some company somewhere would have the bright idea to actually work on that.

Even with mobile plans. What kept me from getting an unlimited plan through my carrier was price. I don't NEED 4 lines. I just want the 2 my wife and I have...

From what I understand, data doesn't cost that much to transmit/use.

Again, I get capitalism, but geez...

The telecom industry ain't capitalist. Far from it. It's been an oligopoly supported by crony politics and an incredibly powerful lobby.

It costs more than you might think. If all the equipment works, then yes, the raw transmission is cheap. But considering a lot of the equipment is exposed to the elements, and there's a lot of electronics that take a packet from point A to point B, any of which can fail at any time, the maintenance costs to the infrastructure is pretty high. Plus, as more economic development takes place in the form of new buildings, and the like, you are constantly upgrading to keep up with demand.

That said, they are totally gouging consumers and making a killing off of what has become a pretty elastic price model for them.

Oh, diety-damnit. It's not going well for those who actually WANT Net Neutrality to remain law. A must-watch from someone far more knowledgeable than I:

Today is the day to help do something about it...but how? Right here:
