  • SUNY Student Reprimanded Under “Unwritten Policy” For Criticizing Liberal Intolerance

    I give the article a 10/100.

Lets see starts off with an editorial comment.

Does not explain what the “Open Mic” event is about, its purpose or who runs it.

Does not give any detail about what was said, by the student in question. Only vague reference to 'the experience of a “conservative woman” on a “liberal campus.”'

Then we have the the "unwritten rule." Its presented in a snippet from a larger document. For all we know there is an actual written rule, and the unwritten rule is less severe. Maybe the unwritten rule is they let some stuff that is against the rules of the event slide, unless people complain. We don't really know. And with the rest of the factual omissions in the article you need to ask if its intentional.

This kind of reporting always annoys me because instead of being able to draw our own conclusions, based on the facts given. We are given a small snippet of the facts presented in such a way to convey what the writer believes.

Without the contents of that letter, and the details of the 'open mic night', and the warning in full detail. It is not possible to form an actual opinion on the event.
