  • "I have never seen....but of course you've all seen"

This is a thing I have noticed. So I was watching a reviewer who does a show about movies she's never seen. She made a joke about The Godfather being obscure and only something film buffs like. The joke of course being that EVERYONE has seen the Godfather movies.

Guess what I haven't seen the godfather movies. I haven't wanted to see the godfather movies. NO one has ever even told me what the god father movies are about. Seriously no single person who has supposedly seen the movies that I know has actually told me the plot of the movies. They just tell me how awesome the movies are and that I should totally watch them.

I honestly feel like these are movies that everyone claims to have seen whether they have or not because it's somehow expected to have seen them. These movies came out the first one at least 8 years before I was even born and the entire trilogy was finished before I was ever old enough to watch them.

Can we please accept that not every movie is seen by every person and that in reality a lot of movies are for a particular fan base. I take you at your word when you tell me you haven't seen popular well known movies from my youth don't call me a liar when I say I haven't watched yours.

*Edit to add clarity* This isn't about The Godfather this is about the fact that people seem to rather than look at me, how I am dressed, say, share, read etc. They go to third parties and ask who I am as a person. "Oh you're 37 you've seen the Godfather" "You were a teen in the 90s oh how sad were you when Kurt Cobain died?"

I didn't know Kurt Cobain had died until years after it happened because Nirvana was just a band on the radio. It wasn't 9-11 a lot of kids didn't know crap about them.

But we get lumped into groups and generalized about and then people divide the generalities into racism, ageism etc but consider all others fair game even if they too negatively affect our lives. I have had people misjudge me based on generalities. I once self-referred as a geek and a work friend got pissed based on what she'd been told a geek was rather than noticing that I love video games, comic books,, and overanalyzing the stuff I consume. She equated Geek with Loser because someone else told her that's what it meant to me.

Generalities are always wrong. Always. And no that's not me being funny I don't consider that to be one. It's not saying that people can't match what the perception is it's saying that people can't rely more on the perception than the evidence.

This past Christmas I was conversing with a few nurses and they mentioned the "Elf" was their favorite Christmas movie I said that Die Hard was mine. They then proceeded to tell me that it wasn't a Christmas movie. Opinions vary.
I've seen the Godfather movies, they're OK to see twice but they loose it quickly afterwards.
Cry Havoc and let slip the marsupials of war!!!

As far as the Godfather movies the first one predates my birth by 8 years. Shock at my not seeing them would be like me being shocked at someone in their 20s never having seen the original Land Before Time. Sure huge movie when it came out. Probably not a big deal a decade later.

Popular movie "franchises" that I've never seen, but apparently everybody else has:

        1. Back to the Future (none of them).

        2. Dumb and Dumber

        3. Harry Potter (haven't read the books, either)

        4. Avatar

        5. Fast/Furious

        etc...

I haven't seen the Godfather either LOL! And on the other end of the spectrum..people thinking that because you aren't over a certain age, you can't possibly know about this artist/TV show/movie.

It is funny how people's minds work sometimes.

Honestly, at one point in my life I had no intention of seeing it, at all. But I was dating this girl in my early 20's...and GWtW was re-released in theaters (this was the late 90's, if I recall), and guess who went to see GWtW...and guess who she wanted to go with her...

That felt like the longest, most boring movie I have ever seen.

Oh god I was forced to watch that damn movie a bunch of times when I was a kid and I hated it. I haven't watched it now in decades and never will again.

I haven't seen the Godfather movies either. They aren't what I like. I haven't seen any of the star wars films either, don't care. I'm in the Star Trek camp. But I don't do the new films, they aren't Star Trek to me.

I haven't seen Dumb and Dumber or any films of that moronic stupid comedy type. Not interested.

Now I can say I like films that are before my time. Just because it came out before I was born or while I was a little kid doesn't mean I will dismiss it. You have to know what came before you!

Evidently there is a Hunger Games premise Japanese movie - 'Battle Royale' (2000). A commenter on a Hunger Games site IIRC had seen 'Battle Royale', decided that the author of the 'Hunger Games' had to have also seen the movie too (she stated she'd never even heard of the movie) and therefore accused her of ripping off the Japanese movie in her books.

I never heard of the movie so the commenter's claim that everyone including the author had to have seen it is false. Yeah the premise for the two movies are close but that doesn't mean any "ripping off" has been done.

I think I know who the reviewer in question is. But back on topic, there are a few of these movies that "everyone " has seen that I still haven't seen, or have seen well after being in theaters.

Last year I finally saw the Godfather. The first one even pre- dates my oldest brother.
Just last week was Pulp Fiction.

That's even a well known phenomenon. A lot of times a joke, story etc springs up at various places in the world independent of each other in a response to the way the world is.

Before Viagra actually became a real thing there were jokes about a pill like Viagra going horribly wrong springing up all over at least the US in different states from people who'd never met each other.

Both The Matrix and Thirteenth Floor have a similar premise of not realizing your living in a digital world but that right there is where the similarities end.
