Default Multi-moderator debates?

Why is this even a thing? I don't get it. I don't see why that Democratic debate a few days ago needed FOUR moderators.

Two I can maybe understand. But I don't get why they really need more than two.

Given the amount of candidates I assume its so no one moderator is driven to the point of rushing the stage and throttling someone.

Why would only one be sufficient? When I was on the Debate Team in high school there were never less than 3 Moderators for any event. Moderators are as much judging performance and arguments as they are asking questions and controlling the flow of the debate.
