Just to be absolutely clear: I take it that this list (except, perhaps, for 1 and 2, for those who enjoy worrying) is not of concern to those outside the military? I mean, we can't *all* have that perfectly-positioned hotel room, and most folks have no reason to think they're in any especial danger.

I also have a Home point on my GPS, but it is to a icon. That way, I know how to find my way back home from there . So if someone steals my gps, then good luck trying to find my house

No, I was trying NOT to do that. What did I say to bring on such an accusation?

Anyway… as it happens, I *do* have a point marked HOME on my GPS. It's very useful, and I'm not the least bit worried someone who steals it will use that to find my house, for a very good reason.

I got it secondhand The point is close enough that, if I tell the GPS to take me there, I won't need it anymore long before arriving, but it's not where I live. (And the guy who used to own it is armed to the teeth, and so would make a poor target. Still, I've considered moving it to, say, Wal-Mart.)

That's a very good point.

And you just reminded me of a kiosk store I use to pass by in Virginia Beach in one of the malls that did airbrush work, including putting your name on a shirt or hat etc. They had a sign up stating that they wouldn't do name-work for anyone 9 or under for their safety.

Yeah it all cute and embroidered but seriously, this isn't the same world as it was when I was growing up in the 80's and 90's it seems that there are more sickos out there now than ever before.

Yes, it is, and no, there aren't. It's unnecessary to ruin a post with really good advice with such misinformation. Most kids are still going to be abducted by family or people they know. However, it's still not a good idea to make your kid an easier target for the few stranger-creeps that are out there.

I am not really concerned with the stick family showing who may not be at home, I am concerned when I see them with names of each person underneath. All it does is invite pervs to come up to your kid and Say...

then bam, little Susie calmly gets into the car and is never seen again or found at the bottom of a river bank 2 weeks later.

You are just making it easier for these pervs to get a hold of your kids when you do stupid stuff like this! Same goes for putting your kids name on the outside of their backpacks, clothes, sports bags etc. Yeah it all cute and embroidered but seriously, this isn't the same world as it was when I was growing up in the 80's and 90's it seems that there are more sickos out there now than ever before. Parents need to stop and think before they do stupid stuff like this.

As far as I go, I really don't give a rats ass what your kids name is or how many you have or that jr is on the high school football team and Susie is a figure skater. I would rather read some funny bumper sticker or saying then think " wow I hope I don't see this family on the news any time soon because the parents don't have a brain between them!"

some of these come from training, some from other sources.


and for the hotel room, when i say "dangerous area" i don't mean detroit or nyc. i mean say... saudi arabia. if you ever go someplace like that IM me and i'll give you the list of what to look for in your room placement.


and i know you're trying to drag the other thread into this one but really #1 and 3 were not from training but from personal observation, and 2 came from a PSA about gps systems.

i call it "opsec fail" because I use it to encompass any situation where you inadvertently give out too much information, or ignore in-plain-sight vulnerabilities.

Actually, Number 2 has been mentioned a lot as a warning to all people, especially in my area (near Washington DC). And it's not directed @ the military (with 2 bases with 30 minute driving range of my town) or the federal government employees (lots of them, obviously), but towards the "regular people" in the area. The GPS thing is usually mentioned during either summer (with the parents & kids going to various sports games and their cars are left alone) or during Christmas shopping time (with people going to the malls and shopping for long hours).

Actually, number 3 was mentioned in a civilian situation in another thread: Dumpster divers using their activities to mask the fact that they were casing the complex.

But all the rest, yeah, not really that important for most of the rest of us.
