This book burning will be held at The Amazing Grace Baptist Church in Canton, North Carolina (http://blog.seattlepi.com/bookpatrol/archives/182095.asp?source=mypi)
There is a link to the church's website at the link above. However, the article writer has graciously reproduced the invitation in living black and white color.
They are going to be burning any and all Bibles that do not conform to the King James Version. This means the New King James Version is going to be burned.
They're also going to burn CDs/Tapes/Vinyls of the "Devil's music" which includes country and western, Contemporary Christian, pop, etc., etc.
They're going to be burning books by the likes of Mother Theresa, The Pope, Billy Graham, T. D. Jakes, etc., etc.
At least the adults and kids will be too busy to protest Halloween? I have no clue.
I'm ... just at a loss of words for what this church is doing.

With any luck Fate/God/Allah/insert deity or belief will take notice and burn several people in attendance.:D

The word 'amazing' in the name is particularly appropriate, methinks.

I would go and start throwing copies of the king james bible on to the fire.

you know, book burners are idiots. And not because they're burning books.
But because they have to purchase the book they're burning, or steal them (and then likely get arrested). Either way, stores replenish their inventory, publishers then get the message the book is popular, and print more. They're doing more to hurt their own cause than simply ignoring it would do.

BroomJockey you are exactly correct. I'm reminded of when a whole bunch of people were protesting changes in livejournal by not posting for a day. It was pointed out that that would actually save livejournal money by not having to pay for bandwidth that one day.

Excellent point BroomJockey. Kinda like the record burning scene in The Rutles (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0077147/) -- "Album sales skyrocketed. People were buying them just to burn them."
Idjits like these guys and WBC make all Christians look bad. :o

Which is the reason they piss me off. I don't care what they do, but they drag down people who don't deserve to be dragged down with them.
I bet the Other Team is overjoyed at their behavior.

I was hoping they'd be burning copies of 1984.

But because they have to purchase the book they're burning
Dave Mustaine of Megadeth made that exact same point in an interview awhile back, when he was asked about people who were burning his records. He replied that they still had to buy copies to burn them, and the band was making money either way.

It's like the people who protest about bands like Alice Cooper; bet Alice loved the free publicity they gave his band back in the day! XD
Also, if they're going to burn any book, they should burn Twilight. 0: )

My brain just broke over the stupidity ...
And yeah ... who else are they burning? Are they just going to go to the local bookstore and buy every single book that wasn't the King James Version of the Bible and then go to burn them? Are these books being donated to them? Hope they have deep pockets.

Churches like this one are why I make sure, when people ask what sect of Christianity I belong to, to say the full name of it. Because it shares part of its name with what all the worst of the worst fundies seem to be.
(American Baptist != Baptist or Southern Baptist, and I'm more than willing to point that out.)

you mean the people like my mother who are too cowardly to stand up to the leadership of her church (United Methodist) and tell them that bigotry is not supposed to be condoned by the church? Or perhaps you speak of the good Christians who have thrown stuff out their car at my boyfriend and I? Oh, you must mean the Christian leadership that say that my kind is responsible for the destruction of the nation? Just maybe you mean the christians who have time and time again voted to remove my rights?
Sadly RK, you speak for a minority. Christianity (at least in this part of the country) has been taken over by the bigots and idiots, and if by the other side you mean those of us who Christ has betrayed, then yes, we are thrilled to see the Christ Cult destroying itself.

Sad part is, these days you'd have people rushing to be the first because "It's not my fault! It's someone else who's at fault!"

That's called a "Vocal Minority". The majority of Christians do follow Jesus' example, which also includes not going about shouting "LOOK AT HOW GOOD A CHRISTIAN I AM!" while doing something good. A lot of the nationally covered leadership may have gone rotten, but the leadership can be gotten rid of as soon as people wake up to the fact that these hatemongers are twisting a religion based on a man who preached tolerance and humility above all other things.

The problem remains that people are happy to remember the negative and not remember the positive. Should the Westboro loons turn over a new leaf and be nice, they'd be forgotten within weeks. They'd also still be known as evil lunatics, since people would never be able to forget the past.

Ah, the KJV...the book that's been used for centuries to justify all sorts of evil acts. I have a feeling that the Klan and many other religious hate groups will be glad to know that their "holy book" has a group of followers standing up for it
Speaking of Halloween, there was some local radio DJ going on about how we "need to retake the holiday as the Christian event it is." When I heard that, my eyeballs nearly fell out of my head from rolling. It's not a fucking Christian holiday, OK?

Ah, the King James version...the one comissioned by the most openly gay king in the history of the English monarchy.
Excuse me, I'm joking on irony.
IDrinkaRum

King James was not gay in the modern meaning! He was just really really really happy all the time! And he liked to keep himself surrounded by beautiful men so his wife wouldn't be jealous of all the beautiful women he could have had at any time. And ... er ... ahem ... I hope people knew that was a bunch of sarcasm ... and schtuff.
Do the people who defend the King James Version of the Bible even know that he was gay? Do they try to say he wasn't? Or do they completely ignore that important fact?
And what makes the KJV better than other versions? I've never read the KJV, I read the Catholic Version (I'm Catholic .. duh XD). But really .. how can they really differ?

It's "better" because it was the first legal English bible. It's "better" because the wording is pretty.
In reality, it's not that great of a translation. They didn't have the dead sea scrolls. The King James bible was based off of the two wildly available translations at the time: the older English, and illegal, Geneva Bible and the Catholic Latin bible. Both are not great translations either.

I can't speak about outside of Utah, but in Utah this so-called "minority" somehow continues to support legislation to keep discrimination legal with landslide margins.
Even if they aren't out on the street beating up random homosexuals, they still condone hatred.

Hey, if it helps my company's stock...:D
And they're gonna have BBQ chicken and all the fixins!
(What, no marshmallows?)
Seriously, though, a 14-member congregation? How many of them are related to the pastor?

In the case of WBC...most of them are related, either by blood or marriage

Maybe the reason they put the invite on their webpage was to:
1. Encourage people to show up
2. Encourage people to show up and bring books
or
3. Encourage people to send them books so they don't have to buy the books themselves?
I was just thinking that.
The thoughts might be stupid, but they might also have some validity.
