View Full Version : Apparently, I as a straight male, cannot listen to Lady GaGa

Happened today and drives me nuts to no end.

I had a friend drop by to pick up a couple of things that he was borrowing from me. I was hammering out some notes since I have an open note final on Tuesday while listening to Lady GaGa. You would have thought I would have committed some heinous crime based on the flack I got from my friend.

I will admit that Lady GaGa's music isn't the type of music I'd normally listen to, but I really like her voice. She's 1 of about 5 female vocalists that I truly enjoy. So, I bought her Deluxe CD a couple of nights ago and I do really enjoy it. According to my friend, I shouldn't.

I really hate that I can't just listen to what I like without getting a bunch of grief.

Apparently, you can't be a gay man who doesn't like Lady Gaga either. One of my male gay friends does not like her or her music. If any other gay men find out, they stop talking to him. It's really stupid.

People's preconceptions seem to stick a little bit more to music and movies than usual, or at least it's more apparent. It doesn't help that most people only appreciate one kind of music and it's almost always something directly derived from their lifestyle. It's like the whole fucking world will end if someone *gasp* likes a little bit of Everything!!

Apparently having Lady Gaga, Carl Orff, Juno Reactor and NIN in the same play-list makes me some kind of mutant hell-beast of the apocalypse.

Anyone stupid enough to judge based on that can go fuck themselves

I wouldn't call you gay, but I can see where people are coming from since her music is more for the female crowd.

Also, I might make fun of you for listening to crappy music.

Lady Gaga is a Madonna-wanna-be. Just like Britney Spears. I'd rather listen to "Madge" herself than listen to some "pretender-to-the-throne".

*sigh*
Thing about music is it's mostly subjective in terms of whether or not it's good. I just listen to it all.

I have Madonna, 4 of her albums. But what has she produced in the past 5 years that's of any real worth? Ray of Light was amazing.

My iTunes analyzer said my top Artists are:

1. Arctic Monkeys
2. Guns N' Roses
3. Rise Against
4. Staind
5. Chevelle
6. Staind
7. Slipknot
8. Muse
9. The Libertines
10. Tool

So really, Lady GaGa doesn't fit into that mix at all. But hey, I enjoy listening to her. That's all that matters.

Lady Gaga is a Madonna-wanna-be.

I dunno I don't think Madonna would've released a "special edition" hits compilation after only ONE ALBUM like lady ga-ga has(as an added bonus it's only $90 a limited edition and contains a lock of her hair!)

can we say trying way to damn hard....

I don't care much for her music at all....but her "antics" at the Grammys was it?-I don't know I don't watch tv much....and the over-selfabsorbed promotion of "all things ga-ga" yeah no-even if she did end up producing some good music, I wouldn't listen to it....but that's MY opinion...heck I ADORE a band no one has ever heard of-they're so underground/indie they make "the flaming lips" look like Britney spears.....and unless you've been a fan since they started out-you will never own all their CDs-available for 1-2 years then out of print and fetching upwards of $300 on e-bay....yeah I have 6 cds that have a combined value of $2000....but I enjoy the music....and encourage others to listen to them as well....

I'm a straight female and I don't listen to typical girly music. I get sick of people saying crap like, "Ooh, Iron Maiden. Is that your boyf's taste or yours?" -.- Yes, girls can like that kind of music; we don't all listen to Kylie.

I happen to love Lady Gaga, and I thought her Grammy's duet with Elton John was amazing. At least she's doing something different, which is such a rarity in pop music.

Heh, I get that, too. Because I'm female (and Black), I'm not supposed to know who Iron Maiden, Metallica, Tool, Pantera, or any of them are. Sorry, I like music because I think it's good, not because it's a certain genre.

hmmm copying madonna is "different"

Duet with elton john like eminem already did is "different"

sorry don't see it

and as I said-I don't watch tv much or awards shows at all-the one where she smashed stuff and hung herself is the one I'm referring to....

well, if you would just come out of the closet you wouldn't have that problem :p

OK, so that wasn't nice... but I see a lot of that too... I get the "how can you like Metallica, you're gay"... or more often "but I thought that gay guys weren't into strategy/RPG games" I don't know where that attitude came from... but I hear it a lot.

Yes, because sounding a little like someone else is "copying"

And teaming up with someone who's teamed up before is "copying"

IMO, she is different and definitely bolder than Madonna. She has a slightly different sound, and besides, Madonna hasn't done anything in years. Nobody on the current pop scene is doing what Gaga is. (One could argue for Katy Perry, but...yeah.)

I didn't say her duet was different, but it was pretty cool. It was a combination of "Speechless" and "Your Song."

But, hey, it's just music. If you like it, cool, if you don't, fine and fuck the rest. I have really weird and random musical tastes - Amanda Palmer/Dresden Dolls, Birthday Massacre, Guns'n'Roses, Billy Joel, Jacques Brel, Zazie.....yup. And the BF has gotten me into Armin van Buuren, Imogen Heap, and Goldfrapp.

I've always been of the mind that I like what I like in music and anyone else who doesn't like it can go fuck off. I don't care what other people think of my musical tastes....I listen to what makes ME feel good.

So if you like Lady GaGa and find her voice interesting (which I can totally relate to, I get intrigued by voices all the time) then go for it. Or whoever your artist of choice is.

My mother was always on my case cause I liked a lot of female singers, not enough male singers. "You should listen to Elvis he's popular" (this was back in the seventies :p)....but I don't like Elvis his voice drives me up the wall. I also don't like Bob Dylan for the same reason. However I love the guy that sings for the Red Hot Chili Peppers (sorry name escapes me right now) because his voice is fucking amazing. By the same token I grew up with and love Linda Ronstadt, Joni Mitchell, the Eagles (Timothy B Schmit is my personal fave there) and so on.

Just let me listen to what I want and leave me alone :D

Oh, and since I'm in theatre, I have to love Kristen Chenowith, Idina Menzel, Sarah Brightman, Andrew Lloyd Webber, etc. etc. I dislike most musicals and outright hate many popular ones. Wicked? bleh. Phantom? Trash. Les Mis? Could someone tend to M. Hugo's grave please? Because he just can't stop rolling. Weepy, overly sentimental crap. I do like Sondheim, because he isn't afraid to make musicals that aren't all about glitter, special effects, and either happy or overly tragic endings. Assassins is pretty much the most awesome thing EVER.

I have Beethoven, AFI, Black Eye Peas, Blue Man Group, Disturbed, Flyleaf, Apocalyptica, Garbage, Lady Gaga, Incubus, Orgy, and many more on my mp3 player. I wonder what people would think if they saw what my full music collection.

My CD collection is pretty varied; I've had people express surprise over seeing Duran Duran, Blondie, Kula Shaker and T-Rex within it, usually with an exclamation of, "But I thought you were a metal head!"

Never realised that liking metal music meant that I had to be excempt from liking anything else. O_o

XD Won't be me... for once, which will make a change. Do you know which band has prompted the most people to say my taste in music is weird? It's not Kiss, not Marilyn Manson... it's Kula Shaker. I lol at those people. XD

I think my playlists would confuse most people. I have nearly 4000 songs on my Ipod, throwing it on shuffle would blow some people's minds. Marilyn Manson to Diana Krall to Atmosphere to (yes) Lady Gaga.

on the topic of Lady Gaga, I'm a fan. I've loved every one of her music videos, and while her clothes are pretty crazy, she is unique. I don't think she's the next Madonna, but then again, I've never been a huge Madonna Fan. She's an entirely separate artist.

Listen to whatever you want, other people's opinions be damned.

first off, yay atmosphere! they're one of my favs.

second, i couldn't agree more about lady gaga. she and madonna both make dance music, and both are pretty much masters of developing an image and self-promotion. their similarities pretty much end there. lady gaga's music is much harder-edged, and she actually possesses musical talent. i've seen her plerform stripped down to nothing but her voice and a grand piano (that she played herself), and it was amazing. i've yet to see madonna do anything similar.

People think because of where I was born and raised that I automatically like Country music. Let ya in on a little secret....I can't stand it.

People also seem to be surprised that I like blow-'em-up movies. "You like those? But you're a girl?!" Hey, I'm the one that picked out "Timecop" and my ex (guy) is the one that picked out "Aladdin"!

I have Madonna, 4 of her albums. But what has she produced in the past 5 years that's of any real worth? Ray of Light was amazing.

Yeah, I got "Confessions on a Dance Floor" and I don't know why.

and as I said-I don't watch tv much or awards shows at all-the one where she smashed stuff and hung herself is the one I'm referring to....

The one where she hung herself was the 2009 MTV VMA's.

People forget about her smashing scotch bottles on her piano at the 2009 AMA's because they were too busy freaking out about Adam Lambert kissing a guy (who is strait, oh noez!).

I've got Rachmaninoff's vespers too!
I also like Lady Gaga, Madonna, Medieval Baebes, Sarah Brightman, and a whole lot of others from so many genres it's not funny!

Sounds kind of like my collection. Just throw in some Celtic.

My CD collection is pretty varied; I've had people express surprise over seeing Duran Duran, Blondie,

D2 - Ah, the best band ever! Loved them for over 20 years now.

And if we want to get into a "she did it first" contest....Debbie Harry was doing it before anyone else....and still is. Blondie has a new album coming out this year! Yay!

If we're listing what's on our music collection, awesome. I have about 50 days worth of music sitting on my computer. All of it ranges from jazz, rock, electronic, trip hop, hip hop, French music, flamenco, and some Brazilian music.

Some of the artists I listen to a lot are:

Nujabes
DJ Krush
DJ Shadow
DJ Cam
Beck
AIR
Red Hot Chili Peppers
John Frusciante
Attica Blues
Psyche Origami
Squarepusher
Stereolab
St. Germain
Thievery Corporation
Nightmares on Wax
Frank Zappa
Boards of Canada
Jesper Kyd.

Right now I'm listening to a lot of Jesper Kyd. Guy's awesome.

The only Lady Gaga songs I have on my iPod are "Just Dance" and "Poker Face" (the first two released in Australia AFAIK)

As for me, because I'm female and under the age of 25, I'm supposed to like all dance music. Given that both my parents are rock listeners, my dad also listens to jazz and R&B and also plays in an Australian rock band (that's not a new genre by the way, it's basically a cover band performing stuff by Australian rock groups i.e. Midnight Oil, Jet, Crowded House etc.) and I was heavily involved in my music class all through high school, I tend to mostly prefer rock/pop music.

Lately I've been going back and forth between Paul Oakenfold sets and Vocaloid stuff, with a bit of Nomico.

You'd never imagine how much crap I catch for not being a native speaker, or particularly fluent, and enjoying it anyway.

Way I see it's very simple....most of the stuff has multiple translations, and it's certainly enough to understand what's being sung about. Plus, there are often very artistically done videos.
