(Didn't think this was a social woe, it was more general in nature, I think, but if this is in the wrong place, please move MODS. Thank you!)

Is the earth really flat? Or round? (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/magazine/7540427.stm)

There are some people out there who still think the earth is flat.

Yep, people will try to rationalize anything away. Hell, there's still an awful lot of people who believe in a literal 7 day creation and 6000 year old earth despite metric tons of evidence to the contrary.
I can't say that I'm too surprised.

Oh my goodness. I read that article. I needed a laugh this morning.

However, I suppose I can see where we have all just accepted what we have been taught about the earth being round without questioning it. My thing is - what the frik is the point?!?! It's round. It's flat. Who cares? It sustains life - OUR life - get on with it.

Oh of course, naturally the scientists and photos from the moon are a grand conspiracy.

Why? What could anyone possibly hope to gain from such a mass deception?

I think this "belief" is just a security blanket to make them feel "special", that they've got some great secret the rest of the world isn't privy to.

Whatever, at least they're not lobbying to have flat-earth-ism taught in schools. They're nuts, but harmless nuts.

I think it was Sawyer Brown (American Country & Western singing group) that had a song that went:

We never walked on the moon/Elvis ain't dead/you ain't going crazy/It's all in your head.

Everything is a conspiracy. Don't you know that? :)

When I first heard about the Flat Earth Society, I was given the impression that they didn't actually believe the Earth was flat, but was about what those guys were saying - don't merely believe everything you hear, and investigate things with a liberal dose of intelligence and rationality.

I didn't really think they believed it as fact... but then, strange beliefs in the face of logic, science and rationality is pretty much standard for humanity....

I've seen the curvature of the earth. That's all the proof of a globular earth I need.

...sides, what would we find on the other side?

Furthermore, their diagram of what a flat earth would look like would be easily disproved by marking out straight line distances across Antarctica.
Also, the science behind plate tectonics and a lot of other geological phenomena would be rendered pretty null by a flat earth. It just flat doesn't add up.

Ha ha, I made a funny.

Not to mention all the pilots and sailors who are OBVIOUSLY in on the conspiracy, and NEVER actually do round-the-world flights or cruises.

Right? Right?

Religious books always say odd things, and there are still some isolated people left in the world. But flat-earthers have *nothing* to defend themselves with except willful ignorance.
