Energy drinks are just like coffee: legally available to anyone and more risky than most legal drinks. However, it's not the drink itself that's the problem, it's moderation. People have been quick to jump on energy drinks like they're the Devil's Drinks, but it's just like coffee - has to be approached with caution and understanding the risks.

Not to sound like an asshole, but finding out something with moderately high dosages of a stimulant, one that actually was selected for in the coffee bean not to give people energy, but to kill centipedes? I have two words for my reaction.

"Well, duh."

There's already a warning on energy drinks not to exceed 2/day for this exact reason.

Quoted for truth. Myself, I can't even finish a whole can of an enery drink- my heart beats so fast it's uncomfortable and I feel like I have insomnia for the next 8 or 10 hours. I drink 1/2 a can over an hour at the start of an all-nighter, and even that makes me feel crappy when the buzz wears off.

The last time I had an energy drink was a bottle of Bawls and I had a nasty cold. Worked great for curing it, I felt fine within a couple of hours.:D

But yeah, I rarely have an energy drink for similar reasons. I like my sleep, thanks.

I found out the hard way exactly how much guarana is in Bawls (I'd drunk Josta before, but the guarana content in that was probably negligible by comparison).

The Bawls rootbeer is interesting, but I won't drink it straight. One bottle of that mixed with 2 full liters of regular root beer is about right.

When I was doing my acupuncture course, my lecturer mentioned that one of the problems he had seen for treatment was an over abundance of such drinks. Equalling Yang Excess, it burns up a person's Yin energies.

Meaning - all energy and no substance.

Personally, I find Red Bull tastes exactly like cough medicine. But I'm guilty of attempting a few...exotic mixes myself. Like the '2 & 1/2':

-Open two different cans of energy drink. Type/brand can differ, but sizes should be the same or pretty close.
-Drink half of one.
-Drink half of the other.
-Pour remainder of first into second or vice-versa and drink that.

Ayeah. Depending on what the starting ingredients are, you can either create something that tastes like fine wine to your palate*, or you can wind up with a wicked brew so powerful that it makes you start hallucinating. Bonus if you add one of those little concentrated 5-hour deals in as a 'kicker'.





*altho I must confess I never made a mix I didn't like. :D

My husband used to drink them. I found them far too sweet and could only handle a sip. But then, even Mountain Dew would be like that to me. Now that I've cut pop out entirely, I find even Sprite to be very cloying. Bleah.

A friend of mine special-ordered one of those "Cocaine" energy drinks some time last year. He was, without a better way to phrase it, a jibbering mess for like, three days after that. Awake for close to 80 hours, according to his wife. And this was a six-foot wrestler guy, so he had size on his side. Still got whacked out of his mind.

It's funny as hell NOW, but it was a freaky few days.

Way before the Energy Drink craze, I had to get up early early and drive in morning traffic. To keep me up for the rest of the work day, I'd pop a couple of No Doze pills & down them with a bottle of Jolt cola. By noon, I was shaking so bad, I had to pop some more & drink some more Jolt to make me "normal" again. Yeah, I gave that combo up when I left that job.

FTR, I have not found an energy drink I like.

My fiance has a heart condition and if he ever drank Red Bull he would almost certainly have a heart attack. He can't take those energy pills for the same reason.
