OK, I know that people have different opinions about this, but honestly, breastfeeding a child at the age of 8? That's too much, and could possibly give the child serious mental issues in later life. O_o
Btw, I gave the topic the NWS tag cuz it shows breasts. I know it's about breastfeeding, but even so, most bosses won't like you watching a breast oriantated video.

Her kids seem a little too fixated on her boobs to be normal. Seriously, naming your mom's boobs? C'mon now.
While it's healthy to breastfeed your kid up to a certain point, you kind of have to wonder if you're arresting their development emotionally by continuing to do so past a year or so of age. Not that I know a ton about breastfeeding, although I can imagine it's not nice on the nippular area. Most of my experience comes from the broodmares, and we wean the babies off around 6 months or so, whenever the babies seem to be pretty independent. At that point, they're really not getting any nourishment, it's just comforting if they had a run in with something scary.

I know of a girl that is right now weening her soon to be 3 year old son. She only lets him nurse at bed time and is trying to get him totally off the breast. Do I feel it is right that she is still breastfeeding at his age, no. Do I understand why she is doing this, yes. Her daughter died of SIDS when she was two months old. She is a very overprotective parent.

I think that's kinda wierd....
And yea, those kids are a little too fixated with their mom's boobs.
To each their own I guess... *headscratch*

How do a woman's breasts still produce milk years after the baby is born?

If you don't stop breast feeding, you don't stop producing milk. It can go on continuously up until menopause.
Aristocratic women in Europe employed "wet nurses" for centuries. These were women who had given birth sometimes years earlier, and continued to produce milk for the offspring of their employers.

5 & 8 years old are too old to be breastfeeding. Especially since they're naming their mother's breasts!?!?!?!?
Between the ages of 1 & 2 is the best time to be removing them from the breast. I had a friend who breast fed both of her children - once they started to bite, that's when she was like, "Whoa buddy! You're going to be weaned!" :p

Wait until they become thirsty at school and ask the teacher for "a drink".

I agree with the right to breastfeed but that woman is taking it way too far. When the kids start to talk and eat solid food, that's when it's time to wean them IMHO.

My little brother breastfed until he was 4 or 5, my little sister until 2 or 3. I remember they used to breastfeed at the same time. The only reason they stopped breastfeeding is because my mom started taking antidepressants.
I asked my little brother a year or so ago (somewhere around age 13-15 year) if he remembered breastfeeding. His response? "I wish I didn't."

If your child can carry on a reasonably coherent conversation before and after breastfeeding, there's something wrong.

Yeah its a little odd at that age. I know someone who breast feeds her 6 year old, and its at the point now where they have to tell him that its a secret and not to tell anyone at school and stuff...poor kid. He's gonna have issssssssssssuuuuuuuuuuues.

Ok, if you feel the need to tell the kid that, shouldn't that tell you something?

hmm so Michael Jordan's mom is overprotective? She nursed him until he was three-he remembers it fondly as a bonding with his mother, and he doesn't seem too screwed up.
The policy recommendations From the american association of pediatrics (http://pediatrics.about.com/od/breastfeeding/a/05_bf_aap_rec.htm)include:
* Exclusive breastfeeding for approximately the first six months and support for breastfeeding for the first year and beyond as long as mutually desired by mother and child.
And the WORLD Health Organization (http://www.who.int/child_adolescent_health/topics/prevention_care/child/nutrition/breastfeeding/en/index.html) (world kinda trumps American methinks)
says:
On a population basis, exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life is the recommended way of feeding infants, followed by continued breastfeeding with appropriate complementary foods for up to two years or beyond.
from this article (http://www.kathydettwyler.org/detwean.html)-PhD. in anthropology wrote it
It is true that there are still many societies in the world where children are routinely breastfed until the age of four or five years or older, and even in the United States, some children are nursed for this long and longer. In societies where children are allowed to nurse "as long as they want" they usually self-wean, with no arguments or emotional trauma, between 3 and 4 years of age

While that's a great post, I do have say, your judicious snip kinda makes the "overprotective" comment out of context. We know the previous child died of SIDS, we don't know any other behaviours being exhibited by the mother.

That's a rather silly thing to bring up. Maybe Michael Jordan's mom *is* overprotective. None of us know her. Just because she birthed and raised a well-known athlete doesn't mean she's some sort of expert on child-rearing and breastfeeding.
I actually agree with the rest of your post. I just don't like "appeal to authority" arguments, especially when they don't even involve a genuine, recognized authority on the subject.

I nursed all 3 of my kids and pretty much weaned them off after six months, I couldn't take it if they nursed until 5 or 8!
