Mosh pits should be formed in the far back so people who are enjoying the band can enjoy the band and the people who feel a need to prove they are tough can play fight away from the mature concert goers.

Or the people who just want to stand there like statues could stand in the back so that the people who are enjoying the band can enjoy the band.

It works both ways.

I've been to a concert where something like that happened; not a tweeny concert tho, it was Blur. XD And Damon Albarn stopped the concert twice to tell people to step back three paces. It's a shame that the tweenie performers don't have the same sense.

My favorite video of a live concert is when Fugazi actually stopped a song and called out a couple of guys for trying to pull out the big bad hit and kick mosh crap... all I can remember is how he called them out for being Icecream eating MFs

That's where the tweens absolutely love the performer and want to marry them, so they want to get as close to the front as they can. In the mad push to get to the front of the group, people fall, but the rest are too concerned about professing their love to the singer to even care.

A run down of mosh pits I've seen

Sonic Youth- Pit forms in the middle towards the front where people are trying to watch the concert. People from the pit are constantly getting pushed into and one large guy in paticular was cheap shotting everybody he could in or out of the pit

Queens of the Stone Age- I got there super early to get up front. Pit forms behind me and I get hit in the back the entire concert. Securty has to warn people against hitting those not in the pit or they will get ejected.

The White Stripes - two idiots keep trying to form a pit but nobody else wants one because its a White Stripes concert, so they just keep pusing everyone around them and pushing each other into people. Finally stop when a person after getting pushed punched one in the back of the head.

Electric Six- the Electric Six where playing at a small music festival. People who obviously came only for them tried moshing during every other moderatly fast band. Got kicked out, snuck back in, tried moshing, got kicked out again, snuck back in, got kicked out a third time for once again trying to mosh and causing trouble.

Foo Fighters- People are moshing, of course they have no concern for anybody else, the pit got broken up and people hauled away by security.


So the next time your in the pit getting pushed into people who aren't in the pit take a second and think abotu them. You are beign very annoying and should stop. I don't think it's mosh pits that are dangerous. Most of the time they are more mature fans of heavy metal groups that just want to show their love for the music.

The things that are dangerous are the pits that form at tweeny-bopper concerts. I won't call them mosh pits because that would be offensive to the name. That's where the tweens absolutely love the performer and want to marry them, so they want to get as close to the front as they can. In the mad push to get to the front of the group, people fall, but the rest are too concerned about professing their love to the singer to even care. Most of the time, the parents of these kids aren't in the front crowd looking out for their child, because what could be safer than an underage concert?

I remember when I went to a Simple Plan concert years ago (don't judge me!) and they had about 5 people who had to be taken away in an ambulance because of injuries sustained by the crushing pit near the stage. They had security guards pull the people at the front to safety when the insane crowd behind threatened to crush them against the safety barrier. It averaged about 1 person every minute being pulled to safety. It was insane (and not in a good way).

On the flip side, every 'heavier' band I've gone to see live, there's never been a problem with the crowds or any injuries.
So yeah, I'm not weary of mosh pits, but I am of the tweeny concert pits.

The bottom line is, if someone feels that they can't take the mosh pit and stays out of one, then they won't be affected by it. In my considerable experience going to gigs, the mosh pit is at the front of the stage... and stays there. The level of moshing depends largely on the band playing; the aforementioned Slipknot/Slayer gig was considerable in its moshing, whereas the Dio gig I went to was far more sedate. (OT: I am so so so glad I got to go to that gig and see Dio play live. RIP Dio.)

But I have never once seen a mosh pit move from where it forms; nor have I seen anyone thrown to the ground and trampled over. Who do you think called security when the child was brought in? Why, the people in the mosh pit, of course, who knew that the child did not belong there.

Same here, and I've been to two concerts where you'd expect moshers (MBM and Prodigy, and Manson Guns God Gov't) moshing, and there were,.I've also been to one where there was none, but there was little bit of a crush (Massive Attack, Mezzanine '98). Really moshing is a metal/punk/fast-loud-music thing anyways, and never once have I seen a concert where the pit formed around somebody who obviously didn't want to mosh. I have seen idiots who wander into the pit thinking they'll be okay though.

As far as I'm concerned, mosh pits are a huge part of the fun in the metal/hardcore/punk scene. Nothing like a proper mosh to get the adrenaline running. . And yes, I hear the music while I'm in the pit.
And I don't know where you are at, but here, anyone in the pit who falls will immediatly have half a dozen people around them to help them up and to cover while they get up.

The moshpit at Slipknot/Slayer had some shoving and pushing, but no-one got hurt; security were onhand to winch up anyone who looked as tho they might not be able to handle the pit, like the aforementioned small child of Mommy Dearest.

My friend and I, who are both tall and non skinnieminnies, were perfectly able to hold our own and yes, we were listening to the music. Also, my friend was drooling over Mick and I was drooling over Joey; shame he has to stay at the back a lot. XXD
