  • "....but Veterans"

I legitimately hate anyone bringing up "but the veterans, you're disrespecting the veterans" because it's never ever been done in order to further a conversation rather to derail them. Any attempt to exercise your first amendment rights to criticize ANYTHING and it's "but you're disrespecting the veterans"

I pointed out how we were all gushing over a video of a store getting to unionize because our government won't protect worker's rights so the workers have to do it themselves. Something that has nothing to do with any war we've fought or our military in anyway except in that undoubtedly some of those workers are veterans. A person came rushing in to yell "but how dare you disrespect the veterans?!?"

The veterans of our country are not the only thing that matters in this country. Nor are they treated like they matter at all once the fights over.

Unfortunately, bringing up "veterans" is an easy way to draw attention (or outrage) to an issue. Look at all the "the US should take care of vets/homeless citizens before any refugees" memes that constantly show up on Facebook. Most of them, at least the ones I've seen, are usually posted by right-wingers--the same people who scream about "socialism."

Again, it's all about the faux-outrage.
