  • "Texas conservatism" out of hand???

The stupid legislators sit around in their offices and make these laws and they forget that it's someone like me who has nothing to do with it that has to be the one to hear all the crap about it.
From what I've seen and heard, Texans are notoriously conservative. If ANYTHING seems remotely close at all to (or just might lead to) interfering with anyone's way of life it MUST be outlawed and banned. A teacher just got canned for taking her kids to the art museum with nude statues. Hell I hear that there was an arrest warrant out at one time for freakin' Howard Stern. His "crime"??? He cracked a few jokes about Mexicans and his show was carried on a station at Dallas at the time! Or what about the preppy kid that murdered a punk and was given only ten years probation for being convicted of murder in Amarillo.

I'm a conservative Texan. I don't know what the context of the visit to the art museum entailed or the age of the children involved. I would have to know more about the story to have a real opinion on that one. However it would seem that if it was just an educational outing and nothing sexually explicit was discussed and the worst thing they were exposed to was nude statues, then I don't see what would be wrong with it. I thought parents had to sign consent forms for their kids to go on field trips anyway. At least that's how it worked when I was in school.

I'm not sure exactly what he said that was so inflammatory, maybe you could fill me in. Texans crack jokes about Mexicans all the time, especially considering that we fought a war of Independence from them and it seems like the lives lost and the hard work that was done in that war is becoming for naught slowly but surely. I don't see how cracking jokes about Mexicans could be in the least bit more offensive than other things Stern talks about. The radio station knew who they were inviting, didn't they?

Letting people off easy for murder is not a conservative concept, it's a liberal one. Conservatives are more likely to be the 'tough on crime' types. The liberals are the ones who want to 'reform' criminals. The conservatives are the ones who want them punished.

The whole art statue thing that happened was about a class field trip to an art museum, don't remember if it was elementary or middle school kids. The kids signed consent forms. There were a few parent monitors(parents who volunteer to chaperone the class, keep them in line). One of these parent monitors went apeshit because she saw one or more nude statues in the museum. So commenced the covering of her child's eyes and sweeping them out of the museum. She blamed the teacher for taking them there. She complained to the school boards and the teacher was fired. All because some ultra-conservative parent wants the rest of society to live by her religious dogma. The uproar here in Texas was loud, and the school board decided to save face by claiming it wasn't the art trip that got her fired it was....something else....they really can't say. Yeah, big stupid fuss.

In that case, the reaction was totally out of proportion to what actually happened and I agree that the parent was in the wrong and the teacher should not have been fired or even gotten in trouble.

I'm a conservative Texan too....but I have to admit that I find a little fault with this statement. Our forefathers stole this land from the Mexicans, plain and simple. Our forefathers weren't there first. They basically came in, beat up the Mexicans, and kicked them out. I have no problem admitting this, just as I have no problem admitting that our forefathers participated in slavery(a real asshole thing to do in my opinion). They lost lives fighting them, sure. But if somebody came in and tried to invade my country, you're damn right I'm going to take their life. Texas was a sovereign state for a few short years, and then it joined the USA. I agree, it's not okay for them to illegally come across our border, especially since a century and a half has passed since the war has ended. Before the Spaniards and Mexicans lived here, the Indians lived here, so who really can say for sure who is the rightful claimant in God's eyes. All I know is the US has it now, so it's laws will rule the land.

Agree completely with this statement. Conservatives are more likely to grant hard time and executions. 10 years for murder in Texas either means they got a liberal judge, a good lawyer, or there were extenuating circumstances(victim was a threat to charged individual).

That parent sounds like the same person who went apeshit when Janet Jackson's boobie made itself visible. People in this country need to get a life and get over the idea that our bodies (and sex) are evil.

The more I learn about politics, the more I lean towards Libertarianism. Too many people have their pokers in too many fires that do not belong to them.

Yes, I'm a Texan. I used to think I was more of a Democrat. When my brother ran for US Congress last year, it made me do some re-evaluating. I can't really say anymore that I've ever been liberal...I'm more "get your nose the hell out of my business!"

If the parents ok'd the field trip, the chaperone had no business censoring what the other students, besides her own kid, saw on display there.

However, that might just make the kids ask their parents to take them back to the museum at another time, when they might actually learn something!

This was when Selena got shot and killed and Howard started talking in a fake Mexican accent about how filthy and corrupt Mexico and he goofed on Selena's music.

As for the boy that only got probation for murder: It hits on conservative overtones because the boy that was murdered was a punk and the murderer was a "town prep", the kind that came from the "good neighborhood and good family". The kid killed didnt even qualify as a human being just because he was the goth-type and him and his friends were well-despised in Amarillo for being different.

Crass and insensitive, but very in character for Stern.

People are so stupid. That shouldn't make any difference. Murder is murder!

Funny thing is that the idiot actually broke his probation a couple of years later when he got caught drinking at a frat party and got sent back to prison. He only ended up doing a couple years and was ordered to move to El Paso.
