Hunter X Hunter frequently gets written off as a Dragonball Z clone, and since they're both Monkey King stories, it's easy to make comparisons. The Chimera Ant arc of HXH is compared to the Cell Saga arcs of DBZ, for example. But HXH is a much more smartly told storyline, where even the out-and-out villains have depth and complexity. Aside from the Monkey King tropes, they're only similar in the most superficial manners.

As it has been famously quipped, 90% of everything is crap. When it was still a labor of love for fan-subs to make their way to our shores, most of what we got was the cream of the crop. With expenses down and profit up, however, we're getting a more representative selection of titles, and thus the crap percentage of what is translated is rising to meet that 90% level.
Also, you forgot the sentai (aka color team) genre. The Super Sentai franchise alone represents a massive library of titles.
