  • Internet Memes - Opinions

What's everyone's opinion on internet memes? Are you offended by them, do you find them funny, do you think they're cruel and/or disgusting? Does it depend on the meme? What ones do you particularly like or despise? Below is a list of 10 popular memes. The ones that might be not safe for anyone to view at work, should they search for them, will have a NSFW tag next to them. Just give your opinion on them; if you haven't heard of one, then you don't have to search; you may just want to. XD

I find most of them funny. Lolcats, especially, can be very cute to me. Mostly, I think, these things get unfunny when taken to extremes.

I like them when they're contained, ie I like going to cheeseburger to read lolcats but I don't like seeing them on random forums.

I think Goatse has to be one of the oldest things on the internet, that was around back in the dark ages when I first got online in the mid/late 90s and suddenly people seemed to rediscover it as if it was a new phenomenon.

Lolcats never get old for me, but then I'm a cat person so it would be something right up my alley.

The only meme/internet phenomenon that ever bothered me is the subculture of people who worship all things Asian. Not only do they make it weird for those who enjoy things like video games and anime (since they get fans of both stereotyped as freaks), but they tend to add to the negative stereotypes of Asia/Japan in general. I'd wager stuff like the ubiquitous tentacle-rape porn and loli (it's not pedophilia, it's drawings! ) finds more of an audience in Western weaboo* culture than in any actual Asian one.

*weaboo being the term I see bandied about for such folks. I've been told it's seen as a slur by them on par with "wigger" for folks who pretend to be black, but for all the headache they cause I don't care if it offends them or not.

Ahem, this is meant for the memes and not for anyone here.

              BURN IN HELL!

              I feel better now.

By observing those, the definition if an internet meme is to use it until WELL past the point where they stop being funny and move to annoying.

But memes are a fad, just like clothing styles and popular cuisine. They will therefore always be around, just like supermodels and sushi. Hating them will not make them go away, as long as the sheeples are out to play.

                  I know, I know.

But I can always hope, right?

I find some amusing, however I have to say that goatse and the like are disgusting and I don't really want to see them any more. X_x Another meme, which I didn't add, was bonsai kittens. I thought that was funny; especially when all the animal rights people were up in arms about the so called cruelty when said cruelty didn't exist.

LOLcats are still cute to me. They have their clever moments.

What kills me is when people refer to them in real life. That tells me that someone needs to go outside a bit more. Either that or it's an old person who read about a meme that's so old it's shown up in a Reader's Digest and are trying to be hip.

                        I love the lolcats.

Some of the stuff on the list I don't recognize, and some of it like the goatse one...eeeeeeeew I remember when that first went around....

I think the "you're doing it wrong" stuff is funny, too.

And I see nothing wrong with applying lolcats to real life (as long as it's only occasional). A friend and I used to joke around with the "fail" cat meme...if someone did something stupid we told them they get a "fail cat." I guess I'm a dork.

I guess I just mean internet culture in general bleeding into real life. I dunno, it's just kind of a pet peeve of mine.

That and people who still think running around yelling "I'm Rick James, Bitch!" is still the height of comedy.

I think I know what you mean. Like people who spell out the acroynyms of text speak rather than speaking properly?

There's a radio commercial for a local mall like that and it makes my IQ drop every time it comes on....
