  • How NOT to raise awareness for ALS

I'll be honest it was only after Simon Lane (Honeydew) of the Yogscast did his video that I actually knew what the ice bucket challenge was.

I had seen many gif's on Imgur of celeb after celeb but very few actually said anything of note, not even in the description box, this however I lay the blame on the gif up loader as they probably cut so much out just to show the celeb in question getting wet.

I knew celebrities were doing it, but never why, given that I saw it as a gif on imgur sandwiched between pictures of cats and 501 HD wall papers, I was less inclined to watch the HD version on YouTube as without context it seemed like the cinnamon challenge and nothing more.

I saw Vin Diesel's (sp) gif and he did at least say ALS, but what it was if mentioned was cut in the gif, but I did like his plant a tree for Groot sub challenge.

One of Simon Lane's nominations was Warwick Davis and he also said what it was and even gave a UK based text number to donate via.

But a related video was for Lady Gaga although the thumbnail showed Vevo, it is actually via World Star Hip Hop News, so maybe a more informative video exists. I found out this when I went to look at the about section to see what she had to say

Had this been an official video uncut, I would have no clue aside from the ice bucket challenge meme going around the a-f list celeb circuit.

So please, if you are going to re upload a video or a gif of one, raise awareness cos I had no effing clue and zero desire to Google as it seemed nothing more than celebs getting wet for fake internet points and exposure (and not the heath related kind).

I just clicked next each time I saw one after a while as I just failed to care and when you are trying to raise awareness, that doesn't help, but I cant help it if those trying to raise awareness fucking suck at it.

I got challenged. I donated the money and I got soaked. I then issued the challenge outward.

But instead of just doing the small donation I did the full donation of the 100.

Cutting off the first of the videos and removing the "ALS" in the title is really missing the entire point of it. I haven't watched a ton of them but everyone I've seen has explained what it is and that its for ALS. Since raising awareness is the entire point of it.

Yeah, gifs don't have audio, but at least leave ALS in the file name. ;p

considering donations have broken the $50mil mark... i think they dun good.

I know they have raised a tonne of money, some people have said they have raised more in the last few months than nearly a decade put together, but as I myself don't follow celebrities via social media and would never have seen the full video as a tweet link to youtube, those spreading the message have failed.

Hell when people started saying how much ALS had raised, there was a distinct lack of ice buckets in the conversation, maybe they felt they didn't need to mention them as "well everyone knows duh".

Even though I know what the deal is (although I would still have to Google ALS), I still see the gif's as self publicity and nothing more even though they donated way more than the average joe did.

And the only reason I don't see it as altruistic is because no one uploading gif's had the decency to say "hey this is why these people are doing this", I see them as two different events, 1 $50 Million was raised with large sums coming from celebrities, 2 celebrities dumped ice on themselves as the new cinnamon challenge. I know they are directly related, but due to the early onslaught of zero context gif's, to someone like me not glued to social media or following celebrities on said media I was out of the loop and no one deemed it necessary to clue people like me in until I long stopped caring.

And no I am not going to look for a longer Lady GaGa video to see if she has the decency to say who what why where and even when, the one I linked was a featured / suggested link looking more like it belonged in a shitty piss porno.

A friend wrote this because of a lot of people saying these types of things
            Too cool to care

What made me decide to write this was the number of tweets I’ve seen on twitter the last few days deriding and ridiculing the Ice Bucket Challenge, as well as some attacking motives, insulting the people involved

I heard about the ice bucket challenge through Hell's Kitchen underground (yes, I still watch Hell's Kitchen ) as quite a few of the former cheftestants did said challenge.

Now people are trying to get ME to do so. Given that I seem to have a lingering cough from a chest infection that still hasn't quite cleared up completely, I'm gonna say NO.

My biggest beef is the lack of connection between the ice bucket challenge and the charity when reported via 3rd parties who just assume everyone knows what the deal is.

I refused to Google it as there was no charity mentioned so I didn't want to see a gazillion videos, then a few filtered through with ALS mentioned but no hints as to what it was, again I'm just seeing celebs getting wet for no apparent reason, I wont Google to find out why they are doing it and if you are not going to enlighten me I am not going to be any the wiser and this stance applies to all future viral campaigns, if I have to do some leg work and research why people most found on red carpets are snorting jelly (jello) via the right nostril only (and never ever the left) I wont stop to look as to why, no context = these guys will do anything if there is a camera on them, however if some imgurian posts a gif set and says "these guys are snorting jelly to raise awareness for X." then I am happy at being informed.

I saw one gif that might have been part of the challenge by a regular woman, though it could also have been a prank that just got sandwiched into the whole thing and be much older.
                The video went thus
Woman and after calling it over a Dog stand in what could be a framing for a photograph, then a large container falls from the grip of two people above a bridge or wall (wasn't paying that much attention to shitty sized gif), now it could have been an ice bucket challenge video that went a bit wrong due to the tub falling, or it could have been a prank in the guise of a photograph that should have only had the water not the tub fall down.
Even that had no info about IBC/ALS all it said was woman and dog unharmed.

In short, I don't care what you do to raise awareness/money for charity, but if what I end up seeing is edited down to exclude all relevant information, count me out for caring as I am not being informed.
If I saw each and every gif say what the deal was, I wouldn't be posting this thread at all, whether I donated or not at least I would know what I was donating for.

I don't care if you meat spin for meningitis or Harlem shake for haemorrhoids or plain old run a marathon, just effing tell us in the description of the inevitable gif of the cast of breaking bad one year reunion, else all it is, is just actors doing the Harlem Shake years after it was a thing.

Hell if I didn't go on imgur occasionally I wouldn't even know this was a thing until the Yogscast video, cos I would never have encountered it otherwise.

Once again, Sir Patrick Stewart remains classy and shows us the proper way to meet this challenge.

As I had already seen Patrick Stewart's as a Gif I originally decided not to click as I could tell that he wrote a cheque, but I decided now after watching "TotalBiscuit does the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge" and his comprehensive explanation of what is happening, to watch both Patrick videos.

Zero mention of what the cause is for in video or description.

He might be classy for just writing a cheque, but he told me nothing about why.

I learned more from TotalBiscuit than all the A list celebs combined, hell I didn't even know Stephen Hawkins had the same thing till ten minutes ago.

Well, I now have a new favorite. I still think Sir Stewart's is the classy way, but the Loading Reading Run crew meets your standards Ginger Tea.

I posted this to TotalBiscuits video thread
100 celebrities drenched and it takes guys on the internet to say what the deal is.
I had hoped that Patrick's video would expand on what it is about compared to the gif I saw, but it works on the premise that everyone should know by now.

If you have no idea about ALS or the ice bucket challenge you get nothing from that video, hell you could say he was writing a cheque to dignitas and it sounds just as plausible.

People who have hundreds of thousands of followers see the video and do the same, most probably just get drenched say 3 of their mates names and go on with their lives because those they mimic do not say "hey if you don't donate $100 to ALS when nominated, you are meant to donate $10 and get soaked."

You and I could donate the $100 and nothing would be known of it, those doing the 'forfeit' might also be donating $100 or ten times as much if not more, but how many regular guys have done videos and due to the sheer lack of info in videos or in my case gif uploads, don't even know that they should be donating $10 in order to call out their friends.

Yes the woman in the horse mask re-enacting flash dance is funny, but did she know she should pay $10? Because as someone who also replied to the TB thread, ALS has been lost in the Meme.

Then we also have this guy.

edit: and Neil Patrick Harris' video linked after a gif set also just repeats his name as doing the challenge, come on the guy used to play a doctor, couldn't he at least fake interest enough to say its for a reason in the 2 minutes?
