Mormon Girl at school.

I was going to post this at the CS board, but thought better of it.

BASICALLY, Mormon girl gets teased alot at school for her religion. School officals claim that its a normal part of High School.

She utters a remark that would seem homophobic.

Well, you can't have that happen at a school! Hate Crime!
So she has it on her record of a hate crime.

Frankly, I honestly don't care what religion she is, nor do I care about if people are straight, gay, bi, furry whatever.

I just hate the fact that the school didn't give a shit when she was being targeted for her religon, and she just scream at something, not a person, but at what they were saying, she was targeted as a bad person.

Neither part is cool. Making fun someone's orientation or religion isn't cool. But for the school to basically say, "F*** you, you're Mormon." is a huge crock of sh**.

Agreed. They were both in the wrong. She shouldn't have said what she did, but those jackasses should have taken the bullying she was getting more seriously. And to those (not anybody here in particular, just society in general) that would say "oh bullying is just a normal part of school life"? FUCK YOU. Maybe if SOMEbody had taken the bullying I got a little more seriously I wouldn't be such a neurotic mess. Amen to that. It'll be a glorious day when people finally get their heads out of their kiesters and figure out that bullying is a Bad Thing and needs to be stopped, for everyone's good.

I hate to say this, but I'm pretty sure the bulk of us were bullied in school. That was a small bit of training for our jobs ahead. It won't be stopped because to many people enjoy it the power of it.

It just has the minor side effects of us snapping at times. Now, I couldn't have done it with guns, simply because that has the huge potential of hurting innocents. But I did finally snapped once and did nearly killed a bully by stranging him and pounding his skull into the ground. Til half the class and the teacher pulled me off.

Strangly the next year when I was allowed back, we became friends. Small friends., but enough to not be bullied by each other.

As I recall, the girl honestly didn't know what "gay" meant. In grade school (and in people old enough to know better, unfortunately ) gay is used as a synonym for stupid. It was the only context she had ever heard the word used in, so how could it be homophobic? I'm disgusted with the school officials who permitted real bullying to continue, and then turned around and labeled an innocent faux pa an actual instance of hate crimes.

It's not so much that...but simply because it's easier for teachers and administrators to ignore the problem. They think it'll just go away. Unfortunately, that's not the case.

Just because bullying is a "normal" part of high school doesn't give the people in charge the right to ignore it. If what she said was wrong, then they should be dealing with the people who started the incident that elicited the reaction as well. It's fine to reprimand her for saying what she did, though I think a verbal warning is more than sufficient, especially for a first offense, but she was reacting to a "religious slur" (for lack of a better term) and those kids should also be reprimanded.

I'm very glad that the English and Welsh schooling system is now waking up to the huge problem of bullying within schools, not just the physical side but also the mental and emotional side. All schools MUST, by law, have a policy to robustly deal with bullying, most schools also have student counsellors that can help with the problem.

I'm not saying that there is no more bullying but it is at least a step in the right direction, and if we can stop one child from having the debilitating effects of bullying removed its worth all the money spent on it.
