  • How "gay" is "gay"?

3 bisexual men were kicked off their respective softball team(s) in 2008 during the Gay Softball World Series because an opposing team manager protested they weren't "gay enough".

The Seattle Times writes that the 3 men were taken separately into a room filled with as many as 25 strangers, interrogated about their sexual preferences and then ballots were cast to whether they were "gay" or "non-gay".

They have filed a lawsuit and while the judge on the case said the NAGAAA (North America Gay Amateur Athlete Association) can limit the number of heterosexual players on their team (each team can have 2), they might have still have violated a state discrimination law.

The National Center for Lesbian Rights is backing this lawsuit because they are pushing for the rights of bisexuals and are wanting bisexuals to be part of the gay definition.

    Oy, my head

Seriously, this country makes it tough enough currently on the LGBT crowd. Others who should understand more than anyone the intolerance of society as a whole should be supportive, not acting the same damn way! "Not gay enough"? Give me a fucking break!

I heard about the case on the radio. Someone was arguing it was okay for "the gays" to discriminate as they have the Freedom of Association as given to them by the Constitution. But then again, as they have the freedom of association (they want to associate with ONLY "pure gay" or "really gay" people), then "the heterosexuals" should be able to use the same freedom and as with the Boy Scouts, have only "straight" people associating with them. (At least I think that was the point of the "argument" - I think my brain broke).

I think it's discrimination on the NAGAAA's part. It's like a die-hard Catholic (or any Christian) telling someone they're not " Christian" or "Catholic" enough because they're only a C&E parishioner (Christmas & Easter). Or whatever other example you can think of. But that's just MHO.

Hm, I know I've seen this on a forum before, but I guess it wasn't this one.

Hell, we can't even get gay people rights. Bisexual people are centuries away if our progress is any indicator. Whoever ran that league is just plain stupid. They kicked people out for being straight even though they are nothing of the sort.

Seems to me bisexuals are both gay and straight at the same time.

Bisexual people have been maligned for many years by the homosexual community. It is only in the last 5 or so that an effort has been made to include them as "real" gays by gays.
I still believe what my mediaval history professor told us, that in the middle ages believed believed in gender/ sexuality being a continium rather than defined by male/female and straight/gay. They believed there were 5 levels, I think's its more like a sliding scale.
Freaking idiotic to throw the players off the team either way.

That's fine, just as long as everyone here remembers that David Tennant and Summer Glau belong to me and nobody else. (Though I wouldn't mind sharing John Barrowman and Natalie Portman...)

And on topic, that just saddens me. How can us non-heterosexuals expect to get anywhere in terms of acceptance if we can't accept each other first?

The Boy Scouts receive government funding- that is the issue of their 'freedom of association'.

Gotta love it when the bigots are on the other side of the fence. :rolleyes"

The whole "only 2 straights" rule and the kicking off of these team members are both stupid and a discredit to the entire movement for acceptance.

I've lost count of the number of times I've seen people carry on and cry foul becuase they're being discriminated against for their sexuality, then they turn around and give bisexuals shit for their sexuality, thankfully I've not had to deal with it yet, all my gay friends are accepting of pretty much all sexuality.

I had to deal with that 2 years ago, in the LGBT club on campus. All the lesbians kept making bisexual jokes.

And guess what? All the bisexual people STOPPED COMING. Cuz who wants to listen to people being assholes?

Last year was a lot better, though.
