Ideally, there would be no women in the military at all.

Nor men either. Because ideally, there'd be no need for such an organization. Since there is, though, (and presumably always will be) there's no reason one sex should be preferred over the other. Nor any reason rape should be seen as just something people should expect in *any* occupation.

Or working in traditional "womens work" i.e. secretaries, nurses, teachers and so on. Which then begs a very rhetorical question:

Assuming that the argument is in place-that women should expect to be raped if they're in the military (in other words a male-dominated field), should men expect to be the victims of stalking and sexual harassment in traditional female-oriented jobs?

sadly I have seen a few cases down here involving women in the military being victims to certain incidents. It's not uncommon, but it doesn't make it OK either.

One of my dearest friends in the world was in the first supply convoy to roll into Bagdad after it fell, she servced two tours in the sandbox before coming home and getting pregnant (just in time for them to try and send her for a THIRD tour. It was awesome, she went 6 months pregnant and asked the desk jockey "Are you SURE about this one?")

I know there was a point when I was out there that we had a slight surge in rapes. Yes, most of them were committed by men. Yes, most of the victims were female. But the solution wasn't to just pull all the women out of country. Instead they installed more lights in areas commonly traveled. Rape whistles were placed around base (I know someone who had to use one and it saved her).

I think the biggest thing people don't realize is that military bases are towns in themselves with a high density of people. When you think of "military base in Afghanistan", rapes, muggings, etc. usually are in the back of your mind and a reality check briefing every so often is needed to keep everyone vigilant. No walking around alone at night, especially for women. When my female co-workers wanted to do laundry themselves instead of having someone else do it, I'd go with them. Never do laundry without your battle buddy.

The attitude over here towards some of the jobs that a housewife should be "paid" for is shocking. I swear my state is stuck in the 50's sometimes....(people seem to think that daycare centres shouldn't exist...nevermind the fact that there are plenty of social and intellectual benefits towards using a daycare centre, not to mention a health one as well. For the child, they get exposed to thousands of other kids who may or may not be sick, so their immune system can build up)

Heck, if and when I ever have kids, I hope I end up working for a B-7 school. (Birth-7 or Birth-12 schools are basically a daycare and primary school on the same site and occasionally a secondary school as well.)

Over here in a lot of places if I dare say that I have more respect for a household of two working parents who are also full time parents who do everything that a stay at home mom does and more then I am treated like I am being a sexist jerk.
