The problem here is not this case in particular, but cases that have hit the news for the past few years.

There are kids out there who are being home-schooled or are in private schools (at cost to the parents) because they wanted to do the right thing and went to the administration and turned in the items that they accidently brought to school.

They wanted to do the right and honest thing and they are screwed. One case a person is not going to graduate as a result of it and is missing out on college. Poor fellow is taking his GED test and will be going into the Navy upon completion. College will have to wait until he gets out and can go as a non-traditional student with the GI Bill.
“There are worlds out there where the sky is burning, where the sea's asleep and the rivers dream, people made of smoke and cities made of song. Somewhere there's danger, somewhere there's injustice and somewhere else the tea is getting cold. Come on, Ace, we've got work to do.” - Sylvester McCoy as the Seventh Doctor.
