  • I know me best

Now, I'm not referring to anything on this forum. No, seriously, I'm not. This was totally sparked by another forum I'm on.

I hate when people try to tell me what I think of something. Right now, on another forum, someone is trying to convince me that I really hated Star Trek (the JJ Abrams one).

I didn't. And I don't like it when people in any discussion try to tell me what I think. Or what someone else thinks.

Whether its religion (You're a Christian, of course you hate gays), politics (You're a Republican, of course you think Obama's a socialist), or even movies (You really hated Star Trek) I think I'm the best judge of my position on a topic. And people should stop trying to tell me what my opinion is.

    So... Yeah.

The frist two examples are sterotypes, so I can see that, just how does someone think you hate a movie that you love? regardless of the movie or genre.

I didn't mind the movie, it kinda killed itself from cannon being it wasn't a prequel but an alternate universe reboot, but it was still an OK movie to watch. iir the alternate universe was the part people hated, but I don't think it killed the movie for the vast majority of viewers, perhaps some hard core trekkies, but as it isn't cannon you could just tell them to forget about it as it doesnt affect the original serise, Vulcan and Spock's mum are still around in the official universe.

      I loath people doing this.

Also, I liked the movie. It was a fun movie. It was Star Trek. It had Simon Pegg in it. Good enough for me. ;p

        Good enough for me, too.

I'm always refuting other people's assumptions about me. I'm not exactly the picture of a veteran metal-head.

          First off, I agree wholeheartedly!

But there's a similar-appearing situation (one I'm sure does not apply in your case) where the "Don't tell me what I think" approach doesn't fly. To use one of your examples (since it's convenient, and in an area I'm used to arguing), someone's claiming you hate gay people just because you're Christian is wrong. But if you were to go around saying, essentially, "No, I don't hate them! I just think they're disgusting child molesters who are all going to Hell and trying to take the rest of the country with them," then it would be appropriate to respond that, protestations to the contrary, that counts as hate

It's part of claiming to be a part of group that has taken a very public stance on certain issues. I mean, there is no more vocal group on hating gays in America than the Christians. So when you relate yourself to a group, their stereotypes become attached to you. Whether it is right is not part of the question. It's when people are surprised at this that is laughable.

Grrrrr I hate anyone trying to tell me they know me better than me. A person will ALWAYS be the top expert on the subject of THEMSELVES. And ya know what? I don't care if they're lying. Maybe they really did hate Star Trek. Doesn't matter. Their word is still tops in that sort of discussion.

Grr I hate that too. It's like they think they're so smart that they know your self more than you do. No, I'm not trying to spite god by not going to church, I just don't see the need to go.

This also reminds me of a very annoying game kids used to play in elementary school. Basically, you'd say no to something and they'd say "Yes you do" in response to everything you say. So annoying...

I've posted on this before, but no, that does not count as hate. First of all, it's misinformation. You can't exactly blame someone for believing what they were raised with. Hell, I was raised to believe that all gays are evil, bad, disgusting people too. I eventually smartened up and realized how wrong my beliefs were. Second, weren't you listening? He just said he doesn't hate them! Again, how can you possibly say that you have a more authoritative view on someone's inner thoughts than they themselves do?

A while back there was controversy over a radio DJ who was denouncing Autism. Everyone on the had this knee jerk "burn the bastard" reaction. Because I disagreed with how they were reacting, everyone accused me of agreeing with the DJ.

Because if you don't agree with one side of things, you must agree with the other. Apprently the idea of neutrality is lost on some groups.

As for the Trek thing, yeah, I too enjoyed it. I thought it was basically what the 60's series could have been without the censor standards.

                      Me too!

Or, they see me in a band tee-shirt and assume that I'm only a fan due to the appearence of one/more of the bandmembers. (Joey Jordison, anyone? ) It also seems to freak people out that I'm married with kids and I garden, sew, crochet, cook, clip dogs, love books and am also an open-minded coffee-addicted Christian!

Clearly, I hate it when people try to tell me what I do and don't like.
