  • Falsely Accused

Anyone have a problem with this old thing? I can remember back as far as my first day of school being yelled at for shit I didn't do. It sucks. I have a good memory for it, probably cuz it happens so friggin often.

I think there's just no excuse for this shit either. There's no justifiable reason for it if someone actually did the necessary amount of "homework" to have any business accusing someone of anything, whether it's a serious crime, or just "who ate the last piece of pie"?

So it bugs the hell out of me. Probably more than it should - one of my main failings in life is being overly defensive, largely because of this little thing. I wish it was a law that you spend ten years in jail if you falsely accuse someone of anything at all.

    Very, very rarely, thankfully.

I once had a co-worker spot me spotter her playing games while on the clock, so she ran to HR to let them know that she saw me playing games as a pre-emptive strike. Utterly failed, however, as Bosslady trusted me more than her and accepted my word for it.

I have another co-irker who has accused me of lying at least a half dozen times. Stupid woman. She takes the word of pet employee over mine despite the fact that she's batting 0 for him telling the truth in any conflict between us.

The most interesting one, however, was in reverse. I was claiming something for which I was guilty when I was little that my father then went and punished my brother for. That pretty much sums up the whole relationship.

That's happened to me. When I was 10 I shoplifted a deck of cards from the grocery store.

Nobody saw me, but I felt awful guilty, so I told my parents. I couldn't get them to believe I'd stolen it.

I've had this happen a few times over the years.........back when I'd first started college classes, I had the woman who ran the computer lab accuse me of printing out pornography - apparently another computer user claimed it had come from the computer I'd been using. Nothing further was said, but from that point on, I always felt like she was keeping an extra close eye on me.

And then it happened once that I was in a chat room and had one of the other women accuse me of making graphic sexual advances towards her in "private mode". Unfortunately, most everyone else in the chat room believed her, and got really pissed off at me.

Ever since I learned it was a major part of politics, office politics, internet politics, or any politics, I've stopped worrying about it. It's going to happen and I can do nothing to prevent it, so I treat it like I would the rain.

On a serious note, that would have an extremely deleterious effect on reporting crime.

Junior year of high school, I was supposed to go donate blood during my math class (I hated that teacher so I specifically picked that time to do it). When I told my teacher that it was my assigned time to go, she told me no, I had to take the quiz with everyone else. I love pop quizzes. I finished in like five minutes and handed it in. She accused me of cheating since I didn't show work and she said no one could have possibly done it all correctly without showing work and having not cheated. The rest of the class was pretty stunned as I was one of the best math students in our school.

I made her give me a brand new quiz after school where she could watch me take it by myself. I finished it even quicker and purposely didn't show my work again. She didn't talk to me for the rest of the year if she didn't have to.

Also, teachers HATE when you have to correct them in math. Then when you show them how it is actually done, and your work, they send you to the principles office *shrug*. 15 years ago math was WAYYYYY too easy.

I've noticed this. Math teachers hate being criticized more than any other teachers. Just admit you got something wrong and continue on. Don't take it out on me because I know what I'm doing.

Practically on a nightly, or at least twice or three times a week basis. Anything that goes wrong in the work area is almost always assumed MY fault. It pisses me off to no end.

Last week, someone smelled that icky smell of something electronic that was burnt. Shift lead started with the "Oohhhh what is that smell that's nootttt goooood!" and my co-worker peeps up that I was the last person to use the big power supply unit, and he comes right up and asks me "Did you burn a unit and not tell anyone about it?" and of course by this point I can't even try to act cool and I get defensive immediately, and this co-worker grabbed all of my units and took them over to the shift lead, where they both proceeded to SMELL THEM to make sure I hadn't done that.

Yeah, you wonder why I hate my job so much sometimes? I am always the first person to be accused or blamed.

It makes life overall really stressful. Can you imagine the weight on your shoulders when you realize you have to be responsible for EVERYTHING? I mean, I always find myself in one of 3 situations. The first is where I am just responsible for something. Like getting to work on time. That's fine. I can be responsible for myself and get myself to work on time. But then I have to be responsible for the shit I didn't try hard enough to prevent. Oh, someone assaulted me, but it's my fault because I MUST have done something to provoke. Local PD takes the attitude that no one ever does anything without being provoked. So I must have started it and I'm lucky they don't take ME to jail!

Ok so now I'm responsible for my own shit, and everyone else's shit. Awesome!

But now, on top of that, since I don't have enough to deal with, people started just making shit up too! Hey, DrFaroohk can handle it! Let's just make up random bullshit and punish him for things he didn't do!

So now I have to take care of ME, which is fine, everyone else, which is tolerable, and now completely made up fairy tale shit. YAY FOR ME!

This must be how God feels...get blamed for everything whether it's her fault or not, and on top of that has to deal with extreme amounts of religious make-believe bullshit as well.

                    <gasp>

                    I must be God!!!!!!!

If it's not stuff that normally falls under your purview, then stop doing it.

I do that every so often to re-enforce the fact that at least one of my co-irkers has some major issues going on. I don't have to, though, as Bosslady really does know the score. Sousy was actually out on Friday, and her regular replacement is really getting a handle on how that desk works. One of the salespeople even remarked to another about how smoothly things had gone.

Oh, I had this problem a lot when I was growing up.

My parents expected me to be perfect. I HAD to be the "perfect child." And that's shitty right there. But you know what? I came damn close to their definition of "perfect."

But they also expected me to be entirely responsible for what my sister did as well. So anything SHE did wrong...was MY fault.

I have no idea how that computes in someone's head.

My dad did something similar. My older sister went through a mild rebellious phase in high school. Because I'm only a year younger than my sister, Dad thought it was a good idea to yell at me pre-emptively about the shit she was doing. So he'd lecture her for an hour, then come into my room and give me the same speech using future tense and threats.

I appreciate his theory, but it didn't work in practice.

I didn't care for the kind of vices my sister did. I liked a different sort of trouble. Dad didn't bother with the pre-emptive lecture on my younger sister when I got caught.

My parents were like that. Basically, anything that disrupted their day and made them have to deal with me made it my fault. Everything that happened, no matter the circumstances, was twisted into my fault. Even chain reaction shit.

"Well, you snuck that extra can of soda, which made it so I had to go to the store earlier to buy more, which means that I this guy cut me off in traffic, so I was in a bad mood, and then I got to the store and they were out of soda, so I went to another store and accidently bought laxatives instead of soda, and then my stomach was hurting so bad I was in a bad mood and I yelled at your brother, and he got mad and took it out on you, so it's really your own damn fault he hit you, and I don't wanna hear another word of it!"

OK, so that's an exaggeration. It still sucked being me. Other kids in school used to get a kick out of accusing me of shit. "Watch this - hey teacher, Dr Faroohk threw a rock at me!" And Dr Faroohk was instantly punished. No questions, no telling my side of it, just...punished.
