I really really hate cheapskates. Especially the ones that have some lame excuse(s) to justify why they're so damn cheap it makes Mr.Krabs look like a spendthrift. There's a HUGE difference with being thrifty/frugal versus a cheapskate. Stiffing tips or giving crappy tips is NOT thrifty, that's just being a cheap asshole. Wait staff and delivery drivers depend on those tips to make a living and to deny them a decent tip or any tip (unless the service was bad) is just plain wrong. Then there's the hagglers, the ones that think haggling will give them discounts on anything and/or everything they want for a meager price. Sorry, but this isn't a car dealership or a garage sale. Browbeating me (or even my supervisor) will NOT give you that discount your small blackened rusty heart desires. Then you have the ones online that put up ads to do so much work for so little money. I don't think so. Homey don't play dat! You get what you pay for. Then you have the ones that are so damn stingy that it makes Scrooge look generous! It's not that hard to give up a few bucks to charity (unless you really can't afford it) or at a least to loan for somebody in need or for small purchases. Sheesh. It's not like you're giving up your limb(s) or your firstborn child! Then there's the spend as little as possible on everyone else but splurge on stuff only for me. Yeah, shows how generous you really are...NOT! Being frugal means watching what you spend, prioritizing your expenses and also living within your means. Being cheap is just plain being a stingy asshole.

I have a friend on social assistance and it's just embarrassing when we go out to eat. At a sit-down restaurant, she always gives the same crappy tip- $1. Even after I told her that the standard is more like 15% minimum, she complains that she can't afford any more, and that the staff should be happy to get what they get.

Once she wanted to put her tip in with mine. I turned her down flat as a pancake, since her tip was so crappy that combining them would bring my average down, making us both look like cheap shits.

Makes me glad we don't have a tipping culture over here, nat min wage or above, tipping optional etc.
I'm not saying that I wouldn't tip, I just know a few people where I would probably end up covering for some of their tab let alone tip, another reason I frequent pub's for meals you pay on ordering, no chance of running out on the bill .

If you (general) can't afford to tip, then you don't need to be going out to eat. Simple as that. At least in the US culture where tipping is expected and necessary for the waitstaff.

Fair enough. I guess I should have stated going out to a sit-down restaurant. Those in the fast food business are paid at least minimum wage since tipping is not expected at such establishments.

why is this person even going out to eat esp if she "can not" afford it???? for what you spend on one meal at a nice sit-down place I could feed myself for 3 days ( and I am not talking Ramin only meals if it were that I could eat for 7 days)

as I have said before and has been discussed ad nausaum in other threads before: treats once in a while are nice but every single month it is the SAME people who order 30 or 40 dollars of stuff (sometimes 2 or 3 times in that same week) and the same thing happens every month

and I am "required" by my company to be cheerleader like happy and totally orgasmic when I either get straight stiffed or get 8 cents as my tip. and no I am not really exaggerating

Tipping is NOT a city in China. unfortuneately it is a way of life here in the US.

ahh..yes..I remember those days.. for 3 weeks of the month, I would take home a least 50 bucks a day. The for the first week of the month,I would have more deliverers, but only made 10 bucks..Good times.. Then there was the one night, first day of the month, my grand total in tips on 16 deliveries was $.55

And I can make a large pizza and an order of cheesesticks last several days, between dinner at home and lunch at work.

I don't know why she bothers- she gets the same thing every damn time- plain fried rice, plain fried wontons, plain chicken balls, and plain chicken nuggets. No sauce or seasonings on anything, just a plate of monotonous beige. So she's hard up for money, yet willing to massively overpay for what she could get at a mall food court, and on top of that she stiffs the servers. Even at a buffet, I try to leave a nice tip, especially if the servers are quick to clear away dishes and refill our drinks.

Honestly, for a buffet I don't feel the need to tip more than a dollar, mostly they don't do much work and the buffets around here are all family owned with little kids running around, they make the price so they get their moneys worth without making you tip.

Perhaps if your friend got a $2.35/hour waitstaffing job, she might change her ways. Seeing what the other side goes through can be a real eye-opener.

She is on income assistance, so you think she would have empathy for others who are poor. But no. Her attitude is a mixture of "I can't afford anymore" and "They should be happy to get what they get"

If she can't afford an extra dollar for the tip, maybe she does not need to eat out. "Treat for herself" or not.

She won't get a job. She goes on about how she can't do anything because she's "tired and draggy" all the time, and her litany of health problems. About how she can't get her GED because her math is poor.

Her health problems are things like eczema, controllable asthma, iron deficiency, and being pre-diabetic. That and being even more out of shape than me.
