Fashion Trends and Revivals Of Past Atrocities

Yeah, I'm also a little shocked at some of the animosity towards some of these trends. The only one I get irked at is the skinny jean trend, because like I said, I prefer my jeans to have a little bit of room in them (but once again, not an excessive amount of room). This trend has made it harder for me to find jeans that fit the way I like them to. However, that's still not too much of a problem since I only wear jeans 2-3 times per week.

I said earlier that I didn't like Uggs, but they do look nice under some circumstances. Some women look very nice in those high heeled boots that are fashionable right now.

I don't understand why skinny jeans are considered unattractive. I don't expect anyone to make a good argument to convince me, since aesthetics are subjective. I'm just amazed at the sheer unanimity of hatred for them.

I think skinny jeans on women with nice legs look good. I've seen some larger women pull them off too, especially with a long flowing tunic shirt and tall boots.

I'm personally not fond of men in skinny jeans, but I know lots of women who think it's cute. Besides, hipsters in skinnies aren't aiming to attract everyone. They aren't looking at me - a 30-something bourgeoisie chick who hadn't heard of Pitchfork until last week - as attractive either.

I just don't understand the level of hatred being expressed for other people's clothes. I tend to look at many of these trends and think, "That look's not for me. But obviously others like it!"

Ugh, skinny jeans are stupid on guys. There's just something about it that reads "I am a pansy." It makes guys look like sissies.

I've got a lot of those, too.

I can't wear skinny jeans (since I'm not, y'know, skinny), and you can't tuck boot cut jeans into boots to save your life.

Then you're doing it wrong. I can tuck full bells into boots if I wanted to. You just have to fold them properly. It's kind of like wrapping an unevely sized round package for Christmas.

I've worn one, for a show, designed and built to 18th century standards, and it is the single most uncomfortable garment I've ever put on.

If you're built right for them, they're so very comfortable. I've got a couple, mostly for faire, yes, but I have another that was for a slinky dress I wore for New Year's Eve 1999/2000.

I helped pull a car out of a ditch in my steel-boned denim corset. Was actually in full hoops, too, at the time. And yet, I was the most capable person among the dozen or so people helping out. >_<

And, yes, when laced up, I can use my chest for a dinner plate. Heck, you can bounce a quarter off those puppies.

Nope. All the fashions I hate, I hate because they're obnoxious. I don't even carry a purse, so will never own some designer bag. And most of my other complaints aren't about the fashions so much as the people wearing them doing it wrong. Except skinny jeans and jeggings - nothing can make either of those attractive, ever. Same for Uggs.

I hear you on the pockets! I hate the fact that most clothes made for women have no frickin' pockets......I don't always carry a bag or purse and want and need my damn pockets!

I buy men's coats because of this. That, and men's coats fit bigger busts better than women's coats.

I always will wear flares. They are the only jeans that make my thighs look skinny and my overall legs look longer and thinner.

I adore flares, too. I like jeans that swirl around my feet. I have cankles (no escape, had em even when I was a scrawny kid), so anything that shows ankle is an absolute no-go.

I remember asian inspired stuff being fashionable a while back, and how frustrated I was that I couldn't wear any of it, because none of it was made large enough. I love many asian textiles and clothing styles, and would have loved to take advantage of that trend.

This. A million times this. There are a lot of Asian fashions that are gorgeous and I'd be willing to spend a lot more on them than most western styles, but if you're over a size 10, forget it. >_<

I think the corsets worn for fashion aren't as extreme as those used in period, in terms of tightlacing.

That pic in the OP, of the woman wearing the extremely tight leggings showing ass crack and pantyline is just obscene. If I were a manager, and some employee showed up for work dressed like that, I would make them change. That's not just a fashion faux pas, it's outright obscene, nothing left to the imagination.

I'm a plus sized woman, and I hate how few fashion trends get made in our sizes. I remember asian inspired stuff being fashionable a while back, and how frustrated I was that I couldn't wear any of it, because none of it was made large enough. I love many asian textiles and clothing styles, and would have loved to take advantage of that trend. But nooo. The people who make plus sized stuff figured that a fat chick like me couldn't possibly want mandarin collars, chinese brocade, or anything else like that.

What's really sad? A lot of real traditional asian clothing styles look good on women of different figures, not just beanpole. Sari are a great fit for all body types, the only tricky part is tailoring the choli, or under-blouse. Korean Han-bok would likewise look good on many figure types, and I've seen variations on Kimono worn by everyone from rail-thin models right up to Sumo wrestlers.
But as soon as western designers get ahold of some pretty Chinese brocade or Indian sari fabric, it seems all they can do with it is turn out stuff you have to be a stick to wear.

As for skirts and leggings, I won't wear a skirt without something underneath. Sorry, but I refuse to wear pantyhose, and in any case, I feel exposed wearing nothing but slip/underwear/pantyhose. So I wear biker shorts or tight leggings under my skirts for modesty. But I only wear ankle length skirts in very loose styles, so they're not generally visible.

I hate the skinny jeans, they never look good on anybody, especially guys. Worse is when you see the guys sagging their skinny jeans.... The spandex leggings no matter how skinny or fat the figure never looks good. Then there's the patterns that look like the reupholstered couch covers,bicycle shorts and day glo colors.... blech. I hope the parachute pants and zooba pants don't ever come back.

Okay I'm not tiny, but I do carry rather large bags. To be fair, I often put my 11X14 portfolio book (this thing: portfolio ) in my bag when I go for interviews, and I like to carry books with me pretty much at all times, and often a sketchbook. And to think when I was in elementary school I said I'd never carry a purse!

I can't stand a lot of hipster fashion, like the big fake glasses, and skinny jeans on guys that also hang most of the way off their asses. Also, people try to look like you've bathed in the last month at least, thanks!

I actually am about 20 pounds away from my "perfect" weight and body shape, and even then, I wouldn't wear skinny jeans.

When I was thinner, I still wore low cut flares. I always will wear flares. They are the only jeans that make my thighs look skinny and my overall legs look longer and thinner. Pair them with a nice pair of heels and it's perfect.

I wear camis under just about any kind of top, for cleavage control. I don't mind that trend, I've been doing it for ages. I have camis in every color and style. During the work week, I use men's undershirts in lieu of a cami.

I don't get the wild color combos, either. Again, just an ugly reminder of the horrendous 80s trends. Lime green and hot pink worn together? Blech.

Band t-shirts are not super cool. Band t-shirts mean you had $30 extra dollar to spend at a concert. Oh, you bought it vintage? So you never even saw the band. Loser.

By this standard, nobody of our generation should be wearing Beatles, Led Zepplin, or Bob Marley T-shirts, to name a few, because there's no possible way they could have seen them live.

The Beatles broke up 40 years ago and two of their members are dead. Led Zepplin essentially ceased to be when John Bonham died 30 years ago. Bob Marley's been dead for 30 years. But lots of people still enjoy their music.

This is how it was for me in high school and college. I had t-shirts of punk rock bands that were only active in the early 80s, when I was still trying to master proper use of the toilet.

I give band t-shirt wearers the benefit of the doubt and assume they're fans of the bands they're wearing. Even if the shirt is a mass-produced one from Target or the swamp.

I don't know if this counts as a trend, but WTF is up with plus sized stores only carrying clothing that looks like it's made for old ladies? Seriously, bigger girls want to look modern and nice too! Though this is mainly something I notice when I'm physically in the store, online it's not difficult to find cute plus sized clothing, the prices on the other hand .

I absolutely hate that. I would love for some of the more popular stores to open a plus sized version with all the same clothes in bigger sizes.

Well, to an extent, yes. I'd love to be able to fit into skinny jeans and have enough money to splurge for fancy clothes. The main reason I've never been a fashionista is namely that I could never afford it, even when I did have the figure for it.

I still wouldn't want a low-cut blouse, even if I did have the cleavage to make it work. And no way in hell would I ever like saggy-butt jeans! They look ugly on everybody, even extremely beautiful people.

You know, half the time I hear someone complaining about fashion trends, it's not that they hate the trend so much as they personally cannot pull it off, or can't afford it.

I don't think that's so much the case in this thread, but I am reminded of it all the same.

I use to complain about women wasting money on designer handbags all the time, back when I was a starving student.

Now that I have disposable income, I own several designer handbags. I'm not necessarily proud of it...but God, I really love those bags.
