Blas, if we're sharing horror stories from smaller cities, this was back when Reno was about half the size it is now (or just slightly than Cache Valley Utah is now), there was a teenage girl who was raped, beaten, and then while still alive thrown in a dumpster, dowsed in gasoline, and burnt alive. The guy who did it was white, so I guess that doesn't count by the black gang or large city standards either

It's apparently not a generalization at all that larger city police only have to deal with black gangs. I guess there's no such thing as Asian gangs or white gangs (skin heads are finally extinct?) or any other race of gangs. Just black.

And have you ever lived in a smaller or rural community? While there may not be large populations of different races and violence that may tend to happen in places like Minneapolis or Milwaukee, in this podunk part of Wisconsin, officers risk their lives every time they bust a meth lab. And if I may do some stereotyping myself, there are a LOT of inbreeds and white trash around here who may not be gangs, but certainly cause a lot of violence with guns and domestic disputes. There are a lot of people in these smaller towns who are out to cause trouble. There aren't several beatings or muggings or murders like there are in bigger cities, but the ones we have are very epic because they tend to be so outrageous and gory and twisted. Because this is such a small podunk area in Wisconsin that everyone knows everyone and towns are so isolated, there are so many unincorporated or less than 1,000 people towns that there really isn't a police force and the State Patrol can't be everywhere at one time, can they?

Just recently, some guy was cut off in traffic, and he followed the guy home. The guy he followed immediately went in the house and got his rifle and started shooting rounds off (at the sky, though, not the other dude). But that doesn't count because it isn't a black gang.

Edit: Just wanted to clarify, that may not be a very epic story, but there are plenty of others that I just don't have time for. Another recent one that I can just think of off the top of my head was a real Jerry Springer type situation that ended up with a guy stalking his ex and going to her trailer and slitting her and her mother's throat. In a small town of only a couple thousand about 15 miles from any other city that isn't unincorporated.

So, SLCPD's (which is NOT the same department as SSLPD... there is over a dozen police departments in this valley... the joke is that you'll die before they figure out whose jurisdiction you're in) ongoing fight with Polynesian gangs doesn't count? History Channel had a special on the Polynesian gangs, those guys are serious. These so called black gangs fear the Polynesian gangs... but apparently, since they aren't black, SLCPD has nothing to worry about... give me a break

I once thought cops became cops to help people in need and to protect them from all things. Pretty serious work. Now I know from Red Panda's incredible expertise on all things police, that they are just a bunch of laid back people laughing and eating donuts all day, unless they are fighting BLACK gang members. In which case it's no longer CHIPS and Reno 911, but full on bloodguts, stopping mass murders, jumping from exploding buildings, and cursing becasue they were just one day from retirement before the entire gangs found where they lived and killed his entire family. But now he is back with a vengence, because he has nothing left to lose....

So, all people you met were fat and smelly, and thus fat people UNIVERSLY smell worst. Not just on your street, or city, or state, or country, or even Earth, but through out the entire universe. I mean, if that isn't a blanket statement, I don't know what is.

Mhm. So the ones who are fighting with Mexican, White, or Asian street gangs don't count? And only police officers who have to deal with gangs that want to kill them take their job seriously. So, all the police officers who have people trying to kill them who AREN'T in gangs don't count, either?

The only thing I have to say (since I thnk it was directly related to my post) is that Cincinnati, where I live, is not exactly rural OR low-crime.

And like AA said (and sited some GREAT examples), rural areas are CLEARLY not immune to crime. At all.

I'm sorry, but the words "rural" and "low crime" don't belong together. I lived in a rural area for 18 years, and there's a lot more crime than you think. Hundreds of meth labs scattered out in the countryside, and drunk driving is practically a sport. And, yes, there are murders, kidnappings, rapes, etc. at a rather high rate considering the low population. More often than not, the "good ol' boy" system is keeping the reported crime rates down. When my father had his horrible car wreck back in the 70's (broke his neck, pelvis, one leg, nearly died), the first officer on the scene just happened to be a childhood friend and threw away the empty whiskey bottles in his truck. More recently, a rich kid crashed his truck (nearly killed his girlfriend), and the deputy made sure all the meth lab equipment in the back "disappeared." Of course, that was the same guy that was caught stealing artifacts from a Native American burial mound.

Normally, I try desperately not to cross thread topics but in this case, I'd like to point out one thing, which reeks of hypocrisy. You say that just because one person thinks a term is ok doesn't mean it isn't offensive to others. Yet, in your fat people thread, you're calling ALL fat people farm animals, smelly, disgusting, etc.

HOW is this different than calling ALL cops 'pigs' as a gross overgeneralization? Is it more offensive because of the profession? Yes, police officers do a dangerous job, and have the responsibility to keep people safe, but just like fat people, there are good ones and there are some not so good ones. Just because YOU think it's ok to call all fat people smelly and disgusting, doesn't mean it isn't offensive to other people. In this thread, you completely contradicted you're entire argument for fat people smell. Further, you argued that it's based off of your experiences with fat people. What's to stop someone from saying all police officers are pigs because that's been their experience? I am trying really hard to see the validity in the points your making, but essentially, there are two completely different bases for the arguments, and to argue for one nullifies the other, so could you please clarify? I'm not saying it's right or wrong to call police officers pigs. I'm not even going to touch on the groundless claims that it means cop killers, but I'm really, really confused over here. Little help, please?

Back on topic: I, too, am pleased to see the wheels of justice turning ever so slowly. A hate crime is a hate crime, and the way the entire case was (mis)managed makes me sick.

Now you're reaching. I never said cops couldn't take offense at being called a 'pig' or having the 'bacon' thing uttered.

I'm actually pretty good friends with a number of officers, several of which just laugh when part of the group oinks at them.

It's also a huge difference between uttering these words in jest when a cop if following, and screaming the word 'PIG' whilst brandishing a weapon and attempting to kill an officer.

There's a HUGE grey area, Panda. You seem to see things in black and white, which is definitely your perogative, but there's soooo many situations in life that aren't going to fall into your neat little compartments.
