Valentine's Day is a non-issue in good relationships. You communicate with your partner and come up with something you're both happy with.

Sometimes my husband and I celebrate it, sometimes we don't. We decide a week or so before if we want to do something. Last year we skipped it entirely. This year we exchanged small, inexpensive gifts, but didn't bother with a "date night". Once in a while, we decide to go all out with a five-course meal in a fancy restaurant and gifts of jewelry. It all depends on our mood that year.

Neither of us are burdened with expectations. If he doesn't want to spend the money, he tells me. If I'm too tired to go out or cook a fancy meal, I just say so. It's no big deal.

In bad relationships, everything's a goddamned big deal. People in relationships who HATE Valentine's Day have a problem with their partner, not the day.

I admit I'm one of those people who don't like Valentines day, because I don't think pepole should need an excuse in the form of a conformist holiday to dote on people they love. They idea of the holiday is harmelss enough, I just don't like how it ends up.

For most everyone, it's overpriced cards, chocolate, and candy (seriously, the chocolate in the hearts is the same as just buying it in the regular box you can get year round...with more than twice the markup). Be creative about it! You want to show me I'm special? Then don't give me the same thing as that guy down the street is giving his girl, or the guy next to him, etc.

Of course I don't actively hate people who do celebrate it, nor am I jealous because I'm single. I just think they're a bit nuts paying the prices they do and think they should try harder to be more original. I almost feel bad for people who are in a relationship because you are EXPECTED to participate and I don't think that's very fair. While my parents do trade cards on V-Day (but little else), they choose to celebrate their relationship on their anniversary instead.

I used to hate Valentine's Day. It IS a consumerist holiday but at the same time, why should I care? It's a holiday to spend time with those you love. Why hate on that? I'm single, in New Zealand, and I have NO friends here. Did I mope around and be all woe is me and crap? No. I went to the bar, shot pool, drank mass quantities of alcohol, did body shots, danced my ass off with some single women, and had an awesome night.

I like what one of my friends did... he celebrated VanHalentine's Day on FB and randomly posted links to Van Halen videos throughout the day

Now, I'm not the biggest fan of Valentine's Day, even though I have my valentine. I find it completely overdone in recent decades. But, even with that, I will not make my distaste public because it affects no one but me. My husband and I just choose to treat it like any other day and not make a big deal out of it.

If I don't feel like reading the Valentine's Day posts on my news feed, I will simply skip past them and look for something more interesting to me. Why should I piss in someone's Cheerios just because they enjoy celebrating V-Day and I prefer not to?

Ah yes the, "It's just a Hallmark holiday to sell flowers!! How dare you celebrate and be happy it's all CONSUMERISM!! You should appreciate your love EVERY DAY!" people. Closely related to the, "You know the tradition of the white wedding dress started with Queen Victoria and the father 'giving the bride away' is a throwback to dowries" wedding haters club.

Some people are just so miserable that they have to share it with others.

    Valentine's day ass hattery

I've noticed that on V-Day each year you have the people who like to share the fun things or just asimple message of love on FB walls and such, which generally brings this out among friends....

"Would people just STOP shoving this shit down our throats! It's a day for mass consumerism, nothing more! Blarghety!"
    Or....
"I am SO sick of hearing about this day! It's singles awareness day because I have no one! My life sucks I have no one and you're all trying to make me feel bad drama llama ARISE!"

Bloody hell I'm tired of this. Just accept that it's a day that comes around every year and move on. Seriously, do so. I've been single on V-Day. Hell, my ex wife left me right before V-Day. My solution? Go be with friends! No self ppity, no "why me?!" shit.
Even a decent no frills hook up is good for the soul. Try it, it's good for you!

    I feel better now, thankayou.

BTW: I do realize that there are the disgustingly oversharing people out there too, the ones who over describe every moment of the most wonderfulest day in the world, yay!. Not talking about them, that's for another rant.
