First, I apologize for waiting this long to post. I kept checking the thread yesterday, and I swear there were no new posts after mine. Had I known what all had been said since my last post, I would've clarified things a *lot* sooner.

Second, I was trying to avoid directly posting Emma's words on what happened. However, to prevent any further conclusion-jumping, I'm going to put it up here anyways, Here, straight from my friend, is what happened:

I was on a date with this guy and he made fun of Xena tattoo. Apparently, Xena and Hercules were 'stupid shows' and he hadn't heard of YH.

First, he saw the tattoo on my hand and asked if I had more so I showed him just my left upper arm, which I have a sort of sleeve forming. Then he saw my Xena chakram/sword one and asked about it, so I got excited and told him about it. Then he said, loosely quoting 'Well, that's a bit stupid. what the **** would make you go do that to yourself?' I explained how Xena made an impact on me, and he said, again loosely quoting, 'You can't be that smart if you think a stupid show like that makes you feel good.' Of course, I cut the date short. I know each to their own and stuff, but seeing as Xena has played a big part in my life being bullied school, and actually finding confidence through watching a strong woman butt-kicker (Buffy helped too), when someone disses something like that it makes me not want to date a guy like that.

There's a guy on Ars Technica that has a goodly portion of his body done up with gaming tats. He's even got an "8-bit" Duck Hunt dog in there.

Heh, sounds like Deadmau5. He apparently got Shigeru Miyamoto to sign his arm next to one of his Zelda tattoos last night and was going to get the signature tattooed on. But when you're busy being one of the hottest new electronica artists working, you can cover yourself up with tats.

I think that judgement is impossible to make without seeing the actual tattoo, and why it is important to her.

True, but the original statement sounded just like she liked the show even if it was silly. Not that she drew any sort of inspiration from it. Some sort of symbol might be inspiration for example. A portrait of Xena herself, not so much. ( Also, portrait tattoos are a terrible idea regardless. >.> )

I have no idea what the tattoo might have been as the only xena thing I can think of his her chacra or whatever frizbee, but some one somewhere will have a grand father with a link triangle symbol on their shoulder and I know of due to a thread on a site I used to be more active on (having long since abandoned the product in question) that there are alot of people with commodor C= tattoo's and lets not forget the "Zune Guy".

My worry would be whether the tattoo would still recognisable for what it was in fifty years' time.

Tattoos based on pop culture have an overly high regret factor. The potential regret factor of tattooing is high enough as is. A tattoo should be something meaningful thats going to stand up to time even if the canvas does not. You don't want something you're going to look back on 10-20 years from now and kick yourself for wondering why you were such an idiot. I've matured and changed as a person so much from the age of even just 25-30 that when I think back on anything I might have considered doing as a tattoo or fashion choice from 18-24 and I cringe.

This to the billionth power. I was actually just participating in a discussion about this with some friends of mine. We're all long-time fans of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys/Xena/Young Hercules, and one of said friends was telling us about how this guy she went out with made fun of her for having a Xena-inspired tattoo. His words, according to her, were that she 'can't be that smart' if she 'likes a stupid show like that'. Needless to say, the rest of us were quite pissed off on her behalf and we assured her that she did the right thing by dumping his ass.

If you want to insult the series and say that *it's* dumb, that's fine. Not everyone's going to like the same thing and far be it from me to try to force my fandoms down people's throats. To say that I'm dumb for watching and liking it, though, is one of the fastest ways to put yourself on my "I'm Not On Speaking Terms With This Person" list.

This roughly a thousand times. I love a number of things, and I do tend to babble about them at times, but I wont shove them down someones throat. And all I ask is that no one insults me just because I enjoy the campiness, the stories, the ponies, etc, etc, etc.

Also, ot: But I love those shows. Hell, Bruce Campbell as the King of Thieves is enough to love them.
